Not sure what but I know there is something
So I'm looking for help, general advice, a friendly ear...
My daughter is 3 and last week I went to the GP with a list of concerns and she had been referred to Camhs to hopefully receive an assessment, for what I do not yet know.
Her speech is behind for her age and she is more or less completely mute at nursery. She makes no effort to respond to even a yes or no question that they ask and just stands there with her mouth open and tongue out.
At home her speech is hit and miss, she is regression to babbling sometimes and baby talk in her own way.
She hits, bites, kicks, pinches etc. Not just in temper but we can also be having a cuddle and she will slap me round the face or saying goodnight and she will bite me. It's completely random and without warning.
Her concentration is not great at games although she does enjoy the iPad with some games or her favourite films of which she only has two she will watch.
She puts everything in her mouth, pennies, string, her clothes like her socks when she takes them off or her top around the neck.
She hates hand dryers and hair dryers although I've tried to encourage her by showing her them in low settings which are not so scary.
She tried to approach a little girl on holiday as she was wearing a peppa swimsuit and she loves peppa. Instead of saying hi or something she poked her in the chest and said 'poke poke' then repeated it.
She is affectionate with me when she wants to be and does give cuddles and kisses in her terms but doesn't like to touched without her wanting it.
There are more but that is the main gist. I'm at a loss as to what to think and need some help or advice. Thank you
So, I quoted the autismy bits.
Delayed speech and not responding to questions can be signs of autism.
Restricted interests is a sign of autism.
She may be sensitive to sound, which is a sign of autism. Though to be fair, a lot of little kids are scared of hand dryers.
Inappropriate social interactions and lack of social skills is a sign of autism. Also, autistic kids tend to be more interested in objects than people. Notice that your daughter was interested in the swimsuit, but not at all in the child wearing it.
All of that said, there could be causes other than autism for each of these behaviors. Only a professional assessment can tell you with any certainty whether your daughter has autism, so it's good that she has an appointment.
