I have known since my son was an infant he was not the typical child. After my second attempt, first one being at age 3, now six, I finally got a diagnosis. I never gave up! When you're a mother, you just know! He has Autism Spectrum Disorder level 1, being Asperger's Syndrome. He also has ADHD and a mood disorder called Disruptive Dysregulation Disorder.

I guess I feel relieved knowing that he is finally diagnosed and we can proceed with the appropriate treatments. It is frustrating knowing it is over looked, however I do know it can be overlooked since he is so high functioning.

I would like to know when you found out about your child or yourself being diagnosed and how you felt. What symptoms did your child display? How long did a diagnosis take? How do you cope with your child and what works best for your child and family? Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm sure many will chime in with their experience, but wanted to share that connecting with your local CHADD chapter or AANE may be a place to start. :D

My son was diagnosed a month ago. He's 7 years old, has a twin sister, and is in first grade. I've known since he was 3 that something was going on. When he was in preschool he would watch the other kids play instead of joining in. If he did join in, he would have to ask if it was ok, even then he would be really nervous about playing with other kids. He is bothered by sock seams, textures of shirts and pants, heat above 80 degrees, etc. He still watches other kids play and won't join in. Though he has gotten more brave this year and does have a few friends. He get obsessed with different subjects and speaks very loudly when talking to others. He talks "at" people, instead of "to" them. My son also has very high anxiety about many different things. He also was diagnosed with ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorder. I felt very overwhelmed when he was diagnosed, but I also felt relieved. Now we can figure out how to help him with the right tools.
