My late grandmother (my dads mom) died of breast cancer in 1997. Her husband (my dads father) died of cancer in 1991 when I was only a year old.

Not to be disrespectful but my grandma in appearance did look a bit 'creepy' and was very old fashioned/ecentric. I remember my mom told me when I was a child I never liked being left alone with my grandmother. My other grandparents though I absolutely adored spending time with but with my dads mom I just felt really uneasy in her presence whenever she looked after me and sometimes my younger brother.

So the question is do children get uneasy when they don't like the way someone looks?

After she died though I came to realise what an amazing person she really was and it goes to show you do not know what you have got until it's gone. I feel sad looking back on the memories of me and her

Yes, I think kids naturally do unless taught otherwise. Or, say if she were in your life significantly more.

That's why kids need access to see all kinds of people...so they won't be afraid.

The book, "Nurture Shock" talks about this type of thing a little. The gist is, it's not popular opinion, but studies show that children have an inborn tendency to prefer people they think are more like them. Without active efforts otherwise, you can see how this can turn sour. But, evolutionarily-speaking, it was needed for children to stay safe, to stay with their tribe.

Both of my kids think different is weird and/or scary unless they've always seen it or we take active steps to counter it (and we do).

There also could've been a legitimate reason you felt uneasy.

If you could guess what reason what would that be?

Some reasons include she didn't like you or was out to do you harm in some way.

I don't know that that's the case, but sometimes children can intuit things adults cannot.

And some people have their "out to do me harm" radar turned up too high or too low...

Oh that's sad because I thought she loved me more than my brother :(

I remember she said she loved me more than my bro

I didn't mean to imply that she was bad.

It's just one of many possibilities. I don't know her or you.

Is it possible you didn't like being the favorite?

My mom says the reason why I didn't like her was because she was strict about things such as going to bed at a certain time etc....
