I did it a little bit in the past. I know it is very common though, a lot of people have done this, however I think you may be best off to post about it in the General or Members only forum, as you will include more of the WP population there then in "parenting".

my son has gone through periods of this.............self-harm is a broad category. for instance, my hubby , who's an aspie, like to hit his knee repeatedly with the head of a hammer~ he doesn't do it very hard, but he says he likes the sensory input. My son, when anxious, will draw on himself so hard that it will leave marks. he's also cut himself to relieve anxiety . thankfully, he doesn't cut himself anymore

Yeah used to self-harm more when I was younger (I'm a mom with AS with a son with Autism) by biting my arms and punching myself in the face or hitting my head on the floor/walls. To explain why I did those things isn't easy, partly out of anxiety/frustration, partly sensory, partly out of being unable to better express my anger and all. I rarely ever get to that point as I spend more times in those states rocking in a chair or listening to music or something else that is soothing for me.

I've actually done a rather good job repressing my anger/sadness...

I put on music to forget...and I do...

generally after listening to 2 albums I'm not pissed off/sad anymore

I find this helps aswell, I like the soothing Ibiza type of music, it stimulates me perfectly, and calms me right down. :)

I used to be big into Heavy Metal but it made me remember my bad times so I got happy stuff-Styx, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis :P
and this has helped considerably :D

ohh another soothing band is Renaissance-they're great

Hello, I have been a cutter since I was 13 years old, almost ten years now. I can relate.

My son is only 9 and seems to have started a very bizarre form of self harm that is very worrying. He will actually sit for hours pulling at his teeth even when they are not loose and he will not give up until he actually pulls the tooth out. He pulled 2 out during easter holidays.

Oh, my. Were they baby teeth? This sounds serious. I would definitely get some outside advice. This is way over the top.

sometimes, when s.i.b. ( self-injurious behavior) goes too far, you have to get them medical attention QUICK ! I'd say pulling out teeth would be a definite trip to the docs, if not the hospital...
son's been hospitalized twice in the past for cutting....doing much better now, though.

yeah, I do. It is something hard to talk about. I don't do it though because of sadness or anger. It just is something I do when I get lost in my thoughts. I've been trying to stop now. Like I figured out the times that I usually do it and instead try to do something to occupy my hands that won't cause harm to myself. But it is difficult, and I think is going to be a long process. But it doesn't mean I won't try my hardest to stop.

Any way...this is a hard thing to talk about.
