My son can't swallow pills. I've tried the standard pill crushers they sell at drug stores, and they don't do a good enough job. We currently use a morter and pestle, which is annoying while travelling. Can anyone recommend a pill crusher that does a very fine, powedery crush?

I've never attempted to give my son tablets and on the one occasion that the doctor prescribed tablets the pharmacist took one look at my son, went back and made up the medication in liquid form instead.

Apart from suggesting that you try for a liquid suspension if at all possible, then I'd probably use a mortar and pestle myself. Sorry.

I don't think it's possible, though I'm not sure if we've ever asked.

We had a very traumatic incident with banana flavored medicine once. He literally threw it up. Luckily it turns there's a marvelous technique that pharmacists can do to neutralize a flavor and add a new one instead. But who on earth thinks banana flavoring is a good idea in the first place?!

I have found that a pair of adjustable pliers does a fantastic job. Just put the pill inside a little ziploc bag and squeeze. To make it a fine powder, I use a rolling pin to finish the job. But like others have said, its best to just get the right stuff to start with.

Consult a doctor or pharmacist before crushing pills!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! Crushing pills can cause extremely dangerous spikes in the medication level in the bloodstream!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !

liquid form medicines dont work for all kids. none of mine can take it straight, and two of the three will taste it in juice or milk if you try to sneak it past them.

however, a pill crushed up and put between two layers of pudding on a spoon always goes down without a hitch =)

i always just use a good old fashioned spoon. i have some thick heavy duty serving spoons that i use, because they arent the cheap thin ones that bend under pressure. or like someone else said, a rolling pin and a ziploc if its a particularly hard pill.

The doctor who prescribed it is aware that we have to both halve them and crush them.

It looks like it might be possible to get it in liquid form from a compounding pharmacy... don't know if there would be complicated insurance issues though.

Doctors don't always get it right when it comes to pill crushing and splitting. If there is no score mark, then you shouldn't crush it. The pharmacist knows better than the doctor on that one.

Something like this? This is intended for horses but if it's sole function is to crush pills, why can't it be used for people as well?

Thanks for the suggestion, but since horse pills are notoriously large, I suspect it won't work for us. The problem with regular crushers is these pills are very small.

Put them in a plastic bag and smash them with a hammer? I still think the horse pill crusher might work if the pills are small.

Put them in a folded piece of paper and crush them with the back of a spoon. Then you can use the crease in the paper to pour the powder wherever you desire.

There are a few of them sold on Amazon, haven't tried any of them so I can't recommend, some have good reviews though. Still using the old mortar & pestle myself.

Search Pill Crusher or Ultra Pill Crusher (looks fairly good) at Amazon.com or google.

Thanks, that looks cheap enough to be worth a try. (My husband found one online that was around $80. 8O )

We're ordering the ultra pill crusher, since several reviews mention fine powder. Hope it works!

The pill crusher arrived and we're very pleased with it. Crushes the tiny pills to a nice fine powder. Also has a handy pill carrier built in.
