Hello,
I suspect that my 14 y/o son has Asperger's. My question is two-fold:
1. What is the advantage to getting an official/professional diagnosis? and
2. Does anyone know of any specialists in the Denver area?

thank you so much for your input. We're struggling desperately to understand what's going on with him but are unsure of where to turn.

One advantage that may not jump out at you is the fact that Aspyism isn't a cut and dried thing like measles or a broken arm. It's a set of things, a spectrum of things, and each and every child has a different set.

The aspyism may be easy to see, and it may predominate other things that you can't see. Maybe hearing problems, or some OCD type stuff.

A professional may be able to weed some of these out, enabling you to attack the issues on a broader front.

Congratulations on the diagnosis. You have the tiger by the ears. Hang on, it is a bumpy ride.

I would go for diagnosis. This will help your son understand himself and know he is not alone.

Official diagnosis also enables him to access services.

I have 2 sons with Asperger's - 9 and 7. They were both relieved when we told them of their diagnosis because it explained why they were different to other kids.

Read the link in my signature below. This may help you understand what your son has had to go through.

I live in Australia so can't recommend anyone. Can you contact your local Autism Society and ask them for suggestions?

Regards
Helen

I live closer to Boulder and we're in the process of getting our 6-year-old son diagnosed. We've been going to Dr. Debby Hamilton (although she's more of a pediatrician -- I don't know if 14 is too old) in Boulder. She's phenomenal. She's DAN certified and she's EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the nutrition side of treating kids on the spectrum. She said she can do diagnoses. If she's too far away for you she may have referrals.
