Natural Calms for Kids
So, school is starting again soon and my aspie daughter (age 5) is dreading it just as much as I am. I've worked hard all summer trying to find something to help her anxiety which I'm hoping will help her when she does return to school. My husband and I have decided to look toward natural remedies. We started using Rescue Remedy and it helps, but she still needs something more. We started using something over the weekend called Natural Calm for kids. Has anyone ever used Natural Calm or any other type of natural remedy and had any success from it? So far the Natural Calm hasn't really made a difference, but it's really hard to tell because she is a different child at home than she is when she is with a group of people as in a school setting. I really won't be able to test it fully until she is put back in that type of environment and by then it's too late. I also understand that it could take several days for the Natural Calm to begin to work, so it's really too soon to tell. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I use exercise for my son's anxiety. Jumping jacks are the most effective. Directed exercise seems to ease him into transitions. Anxiety is caused by a reason, most autistics can't transition (move from one task to the next quickly) and after a couple of failed attempts, build anxiety over it. Creating extensions to the transition help redirect the anxiety and eventually overcome it.
*taking walks between classes/subjects
*applying lotion to hands
*getting a drink of water
*doing a numbered amount of exercises; 20 jumping jacks, one lap of running, making letters with body
These are things that are in Pop's IEP and/or Behavior Plan
We also are investigating natural "remedies" for our 6yo Aspie son. We are leaning toward these:
http://www.nativeremedies.com/aspergers ... rder.shtml
(I think this is the same place that makes NaturalCalm.) Toward the bottom of the page it describes several homeopathic remedies that are helpful for Asperger's, and then at the very bottom it shows various bundles that you can purchase. I think we'll probably give them a shot, because our son's anxieties are one of the most troublesome things to deal with. Good luck!
