When baby livy is about 4 or 5, I want to get these faux jewels so I can pre bury them in a yard or something so when we go "treasure hunting" she can find them and say, "look daddy, I found treasure!"

You can do it just as well with pocket change of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Having money to spend at Wal-mart, The
Dollar Store, ToysRUs, etc mean alot to kids these days.

Though make sure you ask her what she considers treasure. When I was little I used to take ans to the recycling center. As I fed the cans into the side of the machine my dad stood at the front where the money came out. I used to get so angry because the only thing the machine ever gave me was a bunch of pennies. I knew the other kinds of money were all worth more and what I really wanted was a dollar bill.

When I got older I found out my dad was replacing the money with a handful of pennies before I came over to collect it because thats what I wanted.

guys!

Big, shiny, sparkly, looks, feels and smells like a diamond! She's gonna take it home and show it to mommy and hopefully put it on a bookshelf somewhere

while pennies and dimes may be shiny, they are plentiful yet grimy and easy to get caught in the windpipe of my child.

Now, I ask you; would you (as a child) rather have this:

or this:

We ran a daycare in our home for 20 years, we've had lots (49 in all) 4-5 year olds. Many a time I've seen a child that age given a gift only to toss it aside & play with the box or wrapper. To kids the gift doesn't always matter, but the time spent with mum & dad is priceless to all of you. Don't worry so much about the object just enjoy the game.

I'd rather have the fake jewels, if I was a little girl, all over again.

I hid lovely glass bottles with marbles or buttons or glass globs inside.

I think it sounds like a great idea. Definitely better than tieing her up and throwing her in a closet. I also agree with the jewels but be ready to vary the treasure to keep the element of surprise. It should be fun.

one of the best parties we ever had for my son was the year he was 4..........we made dinosaur bones out of air-dry clay. We painted them to make them look yellowy and old. I then buried them in our garden plot ( which had to be tilled). The boys that came to the party were told to dress to get messy. Each boy was given a plastic construction helmet and were told they were going on an archaelogical dig. They had so much fun digging for bones ! ..........We followed up the dig by having a dinosaur pinata & a dinosaur cake. What fun !

Definitely the sparklies! My 8 year old AS boy loves loves LOVES sparkly things. Not that this is universal, but I think everyone is drawn to shiny objects. Ooo, shiny! And kids pick up so quickly on the fact that pennies aren't worth much (darn that teaching of monetary value in kindergarten!). Jewels seem much more buried treasure like.

That's an awesome idea. My daughter is turning 4 this coming month and she is all about the treasure right now. She loves jewels, and ever since she saw a cartoon where they went on a treasure hunt, she wants to do the same.

DIGGER1!

I hope you read this...

I just participated in a topic about fathers somewhere on WP. It was started by Pugly.

All this stuff made me think about your post a little while ago where you talked about how worried you were concerning you being a good father to your daughter.

I think you're going to do just fine! :D

I know this post is a bit 'old' per internet standards, but I just had to come back and say a few things.

Just from the two topics you've started about your daughter, the pics you posted of you being there for the delivery, her mom, and her, I can't help but believe you are going to be a great dad!
Everything I know about you so far (and I know SO much, lol) shows me how much you care about baby Livy.
I'll bet that if you just be yourself, you two will have a great life together.

I started out by treating my daughter as a person just like me. I never gave her some sort of inferior status when talking to her, playing with her, reading to her or listening to her.

Just give her that same option and I'm sure she'll appreciate her dad so much.
From that one picture at the hospital where you are clowning around for the camera, I get the sense that you can be a real fun guy.
Perhaps some adults might not understand your humor sometimes, but your daughter will totally understand it because it is the genuine YOU, and that is the only person she will ever know and will assuredly grow to love.

I found that when I lost control (my shouting, stomping around, cussing out loud stuff when I'd get upset at myself), I actually scared my daughter. This would make me incredibly sad and ashamed, but I would find the strength to go to her and always explain that this is what I did even before she came along and this had NOTHING to do with her.
Today, at 14yo, she has learned that I have my idiosyncrasies, yet I still love her and she is always safe with me.
She's been through all that, my tumultuous trek through my 'gender issues', her parent's divorce, and she is still a wonderful kid.
She seems to be handling things well so far, and I believe it's because of how her mom and I have always respected her place on this earth as another human just like her folks.

Okay, I'm getting off track here... sorry....

Thinking about your little treasure hunts coming up, how much you love your daughter, and the fact that you treat us to this happy place in your life, just makes me smile :D

I want to do something for you...

I recently got an AS book for a friend, "All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome"
It's a children's book with cute photos of kittens and something about AS on each page.
I think it is well written and a good book for any child. I would have been reading this to our daughter even though I knew nothing about AS back when she was small. It's a good book!

Anyway, after I bought that first book, I ordered a second. Not sure why, but I just like it so much I went and had the bookstore get another copy.
So, I have this copy waiting for you and your daughter.
I just need an address to send it to. It can be a work address, a friend's address or your own if you don't mind giving it to me over a private message or email.

I really want to send this book to you all. It's a gift. When you get it, if you feel it's right for your family, then I'll be happy knowing you'll be reading it to your daughter. She deserves to know that her dad is a special person in a good way. Be the first one to teach her how wonderful an Aspie can be! Don't let society get the first word in on that!

So, to make a long post short :P , I would be honored if you would accept my offer! No thanks required, just pass on a little kindness to someone else someday if you like :D

LOL Actually my 4 year old would rather find money than anything else on a treasure hunt... he's just a little bit obsessed with acquiring money... guess that is a good thing but thing is, he tries to find it where he can even if it means asking total strangers which we are trying to discourage heavily at least till he runs his own business.

Last summer, a year ago, my mother and step-father took my son to explore some old indian ruins in the mountains. My step-father hid a couple of real arrowheads amongst some of the ruins for my son to find. Oh what a great day for J! To this day he has no idea that grandpa planted them there, but he sure does cherish those arrowheads. :D
