Parents -- tell the story of someone who helped your child

I think most parents here feel the frustration of dealing with difficult school personnel, or frustrating teachers.

Tell a story about a good therapist, or teacher, or school official, who actually GOT your child's needs and did something positive for your child, and made just a little difference in their lives.

My kiddo's speech therapist is just the best in the world! She knows that he likes to do the opposite or joke around ALOT...and she plays right along with him...example...She'll sing "If you're happy and you know it touch your knee..."...and at the end, he'll touch his ears instead and start laughing...She just stops and say..."is that your knee??? nooooo, that's your ear!"....She has gotten to understand that once he "gets it", he starts joking and does the opposite...and she plays along, and does the therapy as HE needs it...She has truly changed his life...

the school son is in now has made such a TREMENDOUS difference in his life ! finally, a place where he feels safe and understood !
finally a place that has helped him work through many of his issues and helped ! woohoo!! !! !! !!

Our son's developmental pediatrician was a godsend. She recognized his issues and what could help him right away, when our regular pediatrician was saying to wait and see. Luckily, she headed us in the right direction with early intervention, recommended great therapists, summer camps, etc, etc, etc.

All of our son's OTs from a private company have been super, super, super. The first OT from the school district who did his initial eval was terrible. She said that all she saw was some muscle weakness and she couldn't understand why he had that. I asked for a re-eval, and the second OT from the district understood completely and said, "Get this kid in a gym immediately." She works with him now and is also great.

Another person who has helped all of us is a woman who leads baby and me classes in our area. I have been attending her parents group all along, and she has really help me to get a perspective on things, to keep a flexible, open mind about who our son is and what he is capable of, how th connect with him, etc. She also helped my husband and I with our relationship.

I have to say that we are very fortunate to live in a large city in one of the most progressive states in the country, where special needs and early intervention are taken seriously, where therapists have lots of training. The school district itself has its ups and downs, but overall I am very satisfied and appreciative of everything that has been done for our son.

Speaking for myself, I had great teachers in first and second grade who brought out the best in me.
