This is my 3 yr old she has an unofficial diagnosis of pdd-nos. This is her expression when asked to smile. she does it all the time now. I think it's cute but I'm really curious how other pdd/nos/aspie children's school photos have turned out

I'm not posting photos of my son but I can describe them. As a baby and toddler, Pop smiled naturally into cameras. He loved having his picture taken. Obviously, for formal, studio portraits he wouldn't "look at the birdie" so those were harder to take.
Since 1st grade his class pictures have ended up "wierd". He pastes a straight (closed-mouth) grin and looks calm, not joyous. I don't take candid photos anymore. I don't know why. <thinks about getting a camera>

These are my 2 sons, on the left is Brendon (picture from preschool, done last May), he's 4, he's gifted with some AS-like quirks, and on the right is Dylan (picture from Grade Primary last Sept.) and he has moderate Autism.

AHHHH! She's cute!
All four of my kids went through that same stage. I have so many pictures of that face!! I don't have school pictures at that age because my kids didn't attend preschool until they were 4.

Yeah I hear that quite a lot. In fact, Brendon looked so much like Dylan as a newborn, mistakenly called him Dylan a few times. :)

that grin in your daughters picture is quite typical....if it doesn't bother you, and it doesn't bother her i wouldn't worry about it............if it bothers her though, she can always practice in the mirror.

Some of my school pics came out almost like that! The reason is my grandpa told me to show my teeth when I smile.. After 6th grade I had braces and was self concious of them so I didn't show my teeth! I think the picure is way cute!

I think many young kids smile like that whether they are on the spectrum or not.

Oh I don't have any problem with it, I think it's cute, she brought home a printed photo from school yesterday with the very same expression. My mother, however was rather verbal about how she thought she looked very frightened etc. I had to try to explain about the difficulty expressing emotion that Amelie has.

My daughter did almost that exact smile when she was younger. She still does on occassion. It is the demand of being told they need to show emotion, that does not necessarily match up with the circumstances, I am sure. Quite often a picture would mean brushing the hair, pushing and shoving for a class photo, Several classes cramming into the auditorium, noises etc , which are all uncomfortable sensory wise...

We call it the "Chandler Bing smile".... (for all you "Friends" lovers)
