Hi I am new to this website and forum. I am not new to the world of AS - I have a six year old AS son who was diagnosed two years ago. I am always looking for the support and encouragement of other parents because really there is no understanding like the understanding of another parent!

I came across this website as a link from another website and it looks great! I look forward to spending time here gaining strength from those who walk in the same shoes that I do!

I would really like to hear about any experience with the gluten free/casein free diet. We are considering trying this with our son hoping that it will help diminish his self stim behaviour and improve his concentration and focus. Is it really as easy as all the "celebrity proponents" of it claim? What were the improvements, if any, that were accomplished? I am fairly familiar with the theory behind it, but I am more interested in personal accounts because sometimes theory is just that - theory!!

I would Love to hear all about it!

Jen

Hi. I am old.
Getting off gluten and casein improved my health.
It proves impossible to keep my daughter gluten and casein free, so I settle for her being almost free. The dark circles under her eyes are almost gone. So are mine, except when I sin with milk chocolate.
It is not easy, but well worth trying for a month or two.

Hi Jen,
Check this out for starters: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt45945.html. Another member, ouinon, started a GFCF support group, which I thought was brilliant. There have been a couple of good discussions on GFCF; I'll track them down and post the links for you.
Welcome! I hope you get the help you're looking for.

PS. I've been doing the GFCF diet for my son for probably 4 months now, and I truly do think it makes a big difference. He seems much clearer in the head, for the most part (there will be days, however...), and his digestion is...how shall we say...efficient.
The diet may or may not work for your son, but it definitely can't hurt. My son wasn't digesting gluten properly, and the gluten peptides would remain in his body, causing concentration and focus problems. He's not allergic to gluten; he's more intolerant. So until you actually try the diet, don't let anyone try to talk you out of it, or tell you it won't work.
And, as difficult as it may be, try not to be overwhelmed by the diet. Once you find out that nearly everything has a GFCF replacement, life becomes much smoother.

Thanks Masonjar for the link to the previous discussion about the GF diet. Pretty interesting stuff! Lots of things to consider - I think we will try the diet - it is a lot of work but I think it is worth a try!
