Hi, my son has recently been diagnosed with aspergers which is a relief as we have some answers at last. Im concerned though about the fact that he is very hyper and has very bad behavioural problems, im not really up on aspergers as i convinced myself he had adhd, but he is very intelligent. I just would like to see if anyone else has a child that has aspergers but also the hyperactive and behavioural problems of an adhd child x

I have both asperger's and ADHD (I take medicine for both). I think it's very common for people with Asperger's to also have ADHD.

Many, many children, especially school aged children are first diagnosed with ADHD. My daughter and I have both been diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD, but have almost as many AS characteristics as 2 of my sons who are diagnosed with Asperger's. In many families where a child has been found to have AS, there are either siblings or parents with ADHD.

My son is autistic, not AS. Before he had any "intervention" (educational services) he appeared very ADD/ADHD like. He was very hyper and disorganized. Autistics need to have order and routine and even routine activities need to be explained, like in a schedule.

I'm not saying your child may not also be add/adhd, just giving an alternate viewpoint. After instilling habits of scheduling, my son doesn't present like that anymore. Only if he is really, really bored and doesn't know what is expected or happening next.

At 6, if he is able to read, try writing down your daily schedule and what he is expected to do, even what you're expected to do. Even writing down my own sleeping schedule would explain what was okay and not.

I agree with some of the others here that it may not be ADHD as well as Aspergers. It was our son's bad behaviour that alerted us to getting him assessed in the first place, where he was diagnosed as Aspergers. His main hyperactive type behaviours are making loud noises, and reacting to changes in routines or being obsessed with things having to be done a certain way.
After the initial dx, I found it really helpful reading Tony Atwood's book on Asperger's Syndrome. It helped me to realise lots of behaviours that my son has are because of AS, and then this helped as a starting point to develop strategies to help him.

My 10 year old was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5. He takes medication for it now and it seems to help him a lot. Now the counselor thinks that he also has Aspergers.

A lot of the characteristics do overlap, so I couldn't tell which behaviors were related to which diagnosis.
