resent certain things you said/did or certain ways they treated them due to their AS?

Or are they immensely thankful for it?

For me, I resent almost all the stuff my mother said and did that was supposed to "help me with my AS" but she is really helpful telling people about my understimulation problem, which is probably ADD, and the depression, and the understimulation and black holes and that. :)

You'd have to ask my kids that question!

I like to think I'm doing the best job I know how. Of course I'm only human and made mistakes alone the way.

I'll ask my boys to answer this post next time they're on WP.

E is only 6 and was only diagnosed a few months ago, but he already looks forward to going to see his therapist. He doesn't appreciate the "timeouts" we give to help him recover from a meltdown, but he does enjoy the space we created for it.

I would say that at this point he is more happy than not with the "special" treatment, since it's by and large involved a relaxing of our family rules: more computer time, fewer dress code rules, etc.

It sounds like your mother is doing a lot more interventions than we are. Is there anything she's doing that you feel really helps, whether it is hard or easy to take?

Yay! I can't wait to see Smelena's kids' replies! :D

My mom just talked about it all the time, that's all. Not anymore. She always blamed stuff I did on AS, everything I said and did was the AS, my beliefs or interests were the AS, my opinions were because of the AS, my character was because of the AS, any problem I had was because of the AS, any problem I had with anyone else wasn't necessarily their fault, it was probably at least partially my AS. I HATED that last one. Her excusing people who were bothering me, or making excuses for them, or saying it was my mental handicap making me make it happen to me!... wouldn't we all be outraged!

Mum was kind of relieved when she found out I have Asperger's. Among other things, she was really worried I would go to hell because my marriage broke up. Now she doesn't think I will go to hell because I didn't understand the full implications of my actions.
