Has anyone taken their child to a music therapist? My son is being evaluated by one right now. I know he loves music and I sought out a music therapist because she's trained in autism, so she will be patient if my HFA son has some quirks. We're still in the evaluation stage, but she said that he's very musically inclined. Personally, I have *zero* musical talent and wouldn't know music talent if it came up and hit me upside my head. I'm hoping he does have this talent, but part of me is skeptical and I wonder if they say this to almost everyone. I mean, she is selling music therapy :D .

If anyone else has used a music therapist, I'm interested in hearing the results. It's supposed to promote cognitive development and a whole bunch of other stuff. She said that she can also teach him music theory if he's interested.

I'm getting my master's in music therapy. Music therapy has been shown to be especially effective for those on the autistic spectrum. It also seems that there is an unusually high rate of musical skill for those on the spectrum.

Not only can it help with cognition, but it also is known for being very helpful in the realm of social understanding, because of the interaction required between performers is a relationship that requires a lot of communication between people.

My head would have exploded if someone made me see a musical therapist as a child. Didn't matter the scenario - chorus, radio, live concert, singing "Happy birthday." I hated it and would cover my ears

I'm much better as an adult but thats in part because I've learned to naturally block out music. A few months ago I saw the movie "Once." I can't tell you a single thing about it other than basics like "there was a guy with a guitar" and "he rode a bus" The reason being I blocked out every song and pretty much the entire movie was told in songs

depends on if your child likes music, if he does then it's a great idea.

I hope it works out!

I've read that drama therapy is also good for social skills - I'm currently looking into it.

the music therapist at the school i teach at has done amazing things with students.....has gotten students who hardly verbalize to speak more....also does music relaxation with students who are ultra-sensitive to sounds.

My son is taking music lessons because we couldn't actually find a music therapist...We have been told he has perfect pitch by more than one instructor...and also, most parents and kids in his music classes have commented on his great voice when he sings...etc...

My son loves music as well...if he has hearing sensitivities, more than likely, he might have a good ear for music too...

A while ago I found an article/study written about Autism in kids, IQs and perfect pitch...let me know if you're interested and I'll post...
