Just curious if AS is considered a disability for college or public assistance?

not as yet. It's only even been a diagnosis for a decade plus...
of course, in other countries, who knows?

I know certain states are considering making it so. It's only a disability, though, because NT's are incapable of dealing with us. There's nothing we can't do; it's just that NT's can't resist standing in our way, making it as hard as possible.

Isn't it a disability under the ADA?

QFT

NT's feel the need for gangbang character assassination, and since aspies are the ones who don't automatically associate witha group, they're the ones picked on.

If your kid needs special services through the schools then yes, you probably need to call it a disability. We call out kids autistic for the purposes of the IEP. I don't like it, but that's how they get the help they need.

I've always had the option to get Disability Assistance at my college but never needed to use it.

Sorry, that wasn't very clear. AS isn't a disability under the ADA, but autism is. Call yourself autistic if you need public assistance; colleges might help regardless if you call it AS or autisim.

Australia seems to be ahead of the curve on a lot of things.

depends on the severity of the impact. if you have AS but are highly functioning, you can't claim a disability for federal employment, or for social security or most disability programs, as far as i know. if you are so severely impacted that you cannot work or care for yourself, someone who can jump through the hoops for you to get you declared disabled probably will be able to do so. (this is in the USA). so, simply getting your records stamped as "AS" doesn't do anything for you, really. (except, potentially, make it difficult for you to purchase private health insurance coverage.)

Woo hoo!

I'm Australian and as a parent I receive a carer's payment of $90 per fortnight per child (I have 2 sons diagnosed with Asperger's). This helps pay for their therapy!

Also, the school gets an extra chunk of funding for my sons from Education Queensland because Asperger's is considered a disability.

That's how it is in Canada, as well. Asperger's is considered a disability and my kids receive the necessary services and funding because of it. I look at it in the same light as my Crohn's colitis being touted a disability, it doesn't hold me back at all but I do get my special needs funded, which I appreciate.

I was just denied SSD back in Oct. It was the first time I applied. The reason I was given for the denial was, basically, that I didn't complain enough to my doctors and psychiatrists, whenever we met. At my appointments, I would usually tell them that, I was OK and my meds were doing what they were supposed to do. Give me my refills and I'll see you later.

According to my caseworker, It "appeared" that my problems were not significant enough to qualify for SSD.

My advice is that, if you want to qualify for SSD, everytime you see a dr./shrink, complain about how each individual symptom of AS is troubling you, whether you are improving or not. SSD needs to hear it from your doctors, not you, and you must have the proper paper trail. That is what my caseworker told me.

Also, be prepared to be wait 1 1/2 years for the decision. That is the average approval time in PA. Other states may vary.

I'm getting tempted to move to Australia. US corporations are hostile towards people who are honest and hard working.
