It went great! The principal, the school psych, the speech pathologist, Allaura's teacher, and the special ed teacher were all there. They WERE suggesting a 504 and we will start next school year with one, but it appears that now they will do a full psycho-educational assessment next year for her in order to qualify her for special services in the middle school. We're getting a jump-start by addressing things now with a little over a year before middle schools starts.

It turns out that there is an elective class at the middle school just for HFA/AS kids, a social class. They can only qualify for it if they are in Special ED with an IEP though. They're also going to request an /OT eval because of her handwriting problems, awkwardness/clumsy-ness, and problems in orchestra holding her bow(she's getting marked down for improper posture and bow-grip which she says hurts her hands).

They have a GATE(gifted and talented education) summer school camp that's lasts one week and Allaura has absolutely refused to go. Her teacher is now insisting that she go- he will tell her she HAS to go since she fights us on everything. LOL! He's a great teacher. He also informed us that she's been participating more in class, answering questions, etc lately. He noticed a change about mid-February. That's a little while after Allaura started taking Zoloft for anti-anxiety. So that appears to be working.

All-in-all, we're pleased with the outcome and glad that we're finally getting things started for her.

Excellent news!

My 8 year old Aspie son goes to an extension program for maths on Tuesdays. They take the top 2 maths students from each class.

He loves it - though still complains that it's not hard enough for him.

It's good to hear that it went well. I often hear about the meetings that DON'T go so well. So I'm glad to see schools and parents working well together for the child!

It is goo to see, especially since it was a totally different story with our 5 y/o who has mild mental retardation. We had an outside evaluation done, provided it to the school in early November, and we still do not have services for him. The school sat on his eval for 3 months and did nothing. We FINALLY have an IEP meeting scheduled for Friday. The school psych didn't agree with the diagnosis(despite it being done by one of the leading research and treatment facilities for neurodevelopmental disorders in the US) and we had to wait until she did all her own evaluations, then after she was done, she decided he needed to be evaluated by occupational therapy(despite the fact that the evaluation we had done said he needed OT). It's been a nightmare.
