Progress Reports, Poor Staff, am I being unreasonable?
My son came home with a progress report from his school yesterday ....... high medium and low are effort level grade
Reading B+ high........ I do not understand this it should be A+ but whatever
Language C medium
Spelling A high
Math B medium
Science/Health A high ( he does not take Science at all so maybe health but wtf )
Social Studies A high ( he does not take this class either )
French/Spanish INC... ( this is what he takes when he should be taking science or social studies and is a current battle with the school system ) we have received NO work for him to do NOTHING sent home on the subject and have requested that it be replaced with science but his case manager is working on it now as we are getting NOWHERE
Art C low ( pretty nice since he usually draws instead of doing his schoolwork if he's having an "off" day .... go figure )
Music C medium ( he usually gets kicked out of this class because the teacher doesn't know how to deal with him )
Physical Education C medium.... he takes a special phys ed class because he is 9 and his motor skills are at age 5 so how the heck do you arrive at this grade..... based on other kids that don't have any issues I imagine
I totally do not understand this.... anyway for quarter 1 the teacher comments are "zachary has made a good transition to Dike-Newell. He spends more and more time with students appropriately. Reading is a strenth writing is a focus for us to work on" he was tardy 7 days 5 of which were because the spec. bus "forgot" to pick him up.
So on top of all of that he has been sent home twice this month ........today included..... because the staff doesn't know what to do with him when he has a meltdown. They are not consistent with his punishments ie:
the reason he was sent home today ( in less than an hour mind you and after I had called to tell them he was having an off day and would need extra help and after the bus was 20 minutes late which threw his schedule off and we all know how important the schedule is ) he ran in the hall and when they told him to go back and walk the length of the hall he refused. He was repeatedly "pushed" to walk the hallway which just made him madder. Last month we get notes home on more than one occasion that they let him draw or do what he wanted because they didn't want to "set him off" talk about inconsistent. So I guess that letting the teacher know he was having a bad day gave her the idea that she should try to make him mad today. Now I am all for punishment fitting the crime and I think the walking was appropriate but they have shown him on more than one occasion that if he throws a big enough fit he can get away with it so why would he think any different today? I am SO FRUSTRATED. So anyway I get a call from the school secretary saying come pick him up he's out of control and clawing at people. I told them I didn't have a vehicle at home and my husband works the next town over but I would call him and have him leave work and come pick him up if it was absolutely neccesary. By the time my husband got there he was completely calmed down and the principal who is called Dr. Perrin ( I would love to know what her doctorate is in ) actually said to my husband "you have to deal with this every day?" We have had several meetings with them we contact them by notebook daily and generally at least twice a week by telephone to see how things are going. We go to all the school functions and they have our email addresses so there is no reason why we can't be contacted about the Incomplete. I don't even know where to start now. The last school he was in would have managed to get him calmed down and either called and had me talk to him or just sent home a note at the end of the day so I knew what was going on but this place can't even manage to keep him in school until 1:30 in the afternoon I mean COME ON! Aren't the special ed. teacher's supposed to be educated on how to deal with this stuff? I can't get ahold of the case manager today because of tomorrow being Thanksgiving but I will be contacting him Monday. I guess from now until then I can sit and fume! Any suggestions for when school goes back in on Monday?
I don't understand how he "earned" an A in two classes he doesn't even take and I also don't understand the comment from the principal that is my main problem I don't pay too much attention to the actual grades as long as he actually earns them and tries but how he gets a's in classes he doesn't take is beyond me..... leads me to believe they are trying to "push him through" the system.
