I'm a nuclear engineer, my dad's an industrial engineer, and my brother is a mechanical engineer. My mom is not an engineer, but she's in IT, which is closely related as far as aptitude goes, with the only difference mainly being training. I won't bother going into my extended family, but suffice it to say that there are many engineers there. Hehe... a family of engineers... you can bet that sunday dinner was an interesting affair.
Aspies tend to be well suited to engineering... give me a project that interests me, and I don't mind being locked up in a dark, cramped cubicle without windows for days at a time - all I care about is the problem. I'll work my butt off and won't rest until the problem is solved. And then, I'll work on it some more making the solution even better. That perfectionist side of me, while my boss doesn't dislike it, does cause him some headache when it comes to deadlines. Oh well, the customer's getting a better product.
Now as far as the cause-and-effect, that is certainly up for debate, one which I won't go into here.
