okay so my son can go to the bathroom like a regulat kid most of the time but he has days where he has to go every 20 minutes or so. i have noticed this more when we're out

eg yesterday we were at teh mall he went to the bathroom half an hour later he had wet himself. i know he went pee because i was in the bathroom with him.
i just don't get it?
sometimes i think it's an escape from the situation and i get that but it is getting frustrating and soemdays i worry if he has some bladder issues or something.

anyone else had this hapen?
is it to do with the AS or jsut being almost 5 or what?
thanks

It could be any of a number of things.

He could have an infection.

It could be stress (it is perfectly normal for children to go through periods of potty accidents up through age 5).

It could be some emotional game he's playing.

It could be a muscle control problem.

Sorry, but I'm not thinking of good ways to separate all the potential reasons and figure out which are most likely to apply ....

My daughter has problems with going shopping and often asks for toilet breaks.

If you are able to get a urine sample fairly easily I'd be asking the doctor to check for a urinary tract infection just to rule that out.

Personally I find that sometimes being in a public toilet and I get shy and don't finish, thus leading to more frequent visits to the toilet. I hate the thought that others can hear what I am doing in those big echoing public toilets.

My son is 8 yrs old now, but he was very similar at the age you are describing. In fact, I think he probably set a school record for the most visits to the toilet during a two hour school visit, just before he started school!!

I did ask his doctor at a stage and he said he could have a small bladder and that you can be given medication to enlarge it. There is a test you can do by getting them to wee in a bucket for a day and work out an average based on how many times they go. Can't remember what the average should be. Perhaps you could ask your doctor about it.

It was a bit of a concern for me at the time, but things seem to have improved with age. He has just managed to get control at night time now and gets up about once or twice to go to the toilet.

He could have a small bladder. Is this something recent or has it been happening his whole life?

I think you should take him to the doctor regarding his frequent bathrooms trips since you are so concerned.

I used to have this problem because my diet was too acidic--that is metabolized as acidic. Ironically the most alkalinizing thing is lemons. Can you get some fresh lemons and agave syrup or xylitol at a health food store, if you can't then brown rice syrup or raw honey. The lemons are very alkalinizing and these are alkalinizing sweetners. Give him the lemonade on a regular basis. DO NOT COOK THE LEMONS OR GET BOTTLED (PASTERIZED AND COODED LEMONS)! They must be fresh squeezed from the lemon!

Is he drinking sodas, iced tea. Is he not eating plenty of vegetables and salad?

Other alkalinizing foods are watermelon, papya, almonds, raw almond butter, most fruits (except blueberries and prunes). All greens are good and vegetables, avocado. Yogurt is neutral. You can find lists on line to find your favorite foods and whether they're alkaliniziing of acidifying.

Of course, like other people are saying, it could be anything, but an alkalinizing diet is good for everyone's health.
