I don't go out with Heidi (3.5yo AS) very often, usually her 5yo NT sister is with us. Yesterday I got a chance for just Heidi and I to go out together for an hour. I chose to go to KFC with her (as I'd been craving KFC all week). We had a most wonderful time together, it was really quiet yet everything seemed so sharp and bright, sort of an extra clarity in what I was seeing. Just wanted to share it because it really was so very wonderful.

We've never been to this KFC, it is one I drive past daily and I don't want the girls nagging me to stop there all the time. So a whole new environment for Heidi.

I ordered a snack box for us, chips and popcorn chicken, all crunchy foods and let Heidi choose the drinks. They only had soft drinks available so fizzy sugar, flavourings and food colourings it was. Heidi chose green (mountain dew) for herself and orange (sunkist) for me

Heidi chose our table and spent most of her time fascinated by how the sun made the table surface hot. She investigated all the tables them moved onto the chairs in the area we were sitting. The chairs had her puzzled the fabric seats were a little warm but the metal backs were hot.

Not much food got eaten but after Heidi had finished investigating the surroundings she decided to try her green drink. Oooh fizz! Much fun. Another new sensory experience.

All the time Heidi was also coming back to me and butting her head against my arms, legs, waist for pats - very much like a cat would. I had to keep reminding her to stand up and walk, not crawl on the floors. Also that she could explore by touching with her hands and smelling with her nose but NOT tasting with her tongue (well other than the food and drink which are meant to be tasted).

The music they were playing freaked her out and we had a discussion about where the 'dancing music' came from. I pointed out the speakers in the ceiling which led to pointing out the lights and the fans. Until Heidi started asking about it I'd not paid any attention to the music, it was just a low not unpleasant background noise to me.

They've got doorbells on both entrance doors and each time the bell rang Heidi would jump up and look for her sister. I didn't even notice the bells ringing most of the time until Heidi would jump up and ask for Annie.

So amazing just to be there and let Heidi show me how she was experiencing the environment.

Heidi went to Kinder afterwards and they rang me halfway through to say she'd melted down and could I come get her. So maybe the whole KFC thing wasn't such a great idea before Kinder. But she did settle down once I arrived at Kinder, so I just stayed there with her until the end of the session.

A wonderful blessing to experience the world with Heidi one on one for just a few precious hours yesterday. I hope we can do it again soon. :)

How sweet 3.5. :-) At least you and her know at that age and can help her as she develops and gets older. What an interesting KFC experience fascinated by everything! :-) How sweet. Hopefully something can happen with the meltdowns (something to calm her in case you are working or basically to help her cope without you there). Luckily you know at 3.5 though I wish I did.

:-) Hopefully you have more positive experiences in the future. :-)

Thank you. We were lucky to get an early diagnosis. It has made a world of difference to our family with everyone getting along much more happily and with far less frustration. :)

A lot of native french speakers want to speak FRENCH, etc....

I was SHOCKED when an uncle of mine told me Francois Mitterand was educated in Oxford, and spoke FLUENT english! You wouldn't know it from all the times he had a translator, etc...

Still, Kentucky Fried Chicken wanted to move away from chicken and, like most such companies, changed the name to its initials KFC. The change was done to PREVENT such things.

Am I the only one who finds it funny that most of the replies in this thread are about the name KFC?

To keep things on topic, kentucky fried chicken became KFC in 1991. While I was never part of a crowd that was big into KFC, I don't recall ever hearing anyone say kfc instead of kentucky fried chicken in real life

I on the other hand have only ever heard it referred to as KFC.

I wonder if it was every known by its full name here in Australia. I'd go look it up but that would involve far too much effort for this lazy Saturday afternoon.
