I know all kids react differently, but now the psychiatrist is wanting to try Risperdal. I'm willing to give it a try, but I've also expressed my concern for a 9 year old to be on so many different meds. We are going to see him Wednesday, and I'm going to ask him if maybe the antidepressant is to be partly blamed for the still continuing suicidal thoughts. He was on it for six months before he tried to hurt himself for depression, and then the psychiatric hospital increased it a month ago, but the thoughts are still there. That's more then enough time to have kicked in.
The psychologist thinks there's a line between delusion.

Blah. I'm physically and mentally exhausted, bear with me if I don't make any sense. I tend to leave important parts of information out when I'm in this state. Still trying to find someplace to test him that doesn't have a 12 month wait list.

The one thing I noticed when i was in the psych ward for my epilepsy was that everyone was automatically put on risperdal. They even tried to put me on it, even though the first thing the doctor ordering it had said after talking to me is that he didn't think I had any psychological problems.

It seems to me that psych's and risperdal are alot like kindergarten teachers and ritalin.

Agreed 100%

Natsmum please do not do this to your child!

It is a neuroleptic drug that is toxic to the frontal lobes of the brain- the part of the brain most responsible for our capacity for empathy, planning and feelings, but which above all else is responsible for his humanity.

The brain of your child will never develop properly if he takes these neurotoxins. The effects are lifelong and his capacity for humanity and ability to experience meaning in life will be irreversibly diminished.

One day these drugs will be banned just as Thalidomide was, but today the harm continues.

Please please do not do this to your child.

With great concern,

Magliabechi.

My thoughts are with the other posters. I would absolutely, never, ever put my kid on psychoactive drugs like risperdal.

:D Hiya
Sadly I was giving my children Rispiridone alongside Ritalin for a while. Whilst I am NOT opposed to Ritalin, it helped my kids years ago, I DO HATE having to give my kids chemicals.

When I was giving medications it was really one off setting the other. Ritalin supresses appetite, Rispiridone is appetite enhancer. Ritalin rebounds can be balanced with Rispiridone. But like most of you on here it was not something I was ever comfortable with.

But hey as I have been banging on for ages now, we have discovered Phosphatidyl Serine! That with Melatonin works for the WHOLE spectrum! If anyone wants to know more do post and I will elaborate more. The beauty of PS is that it is NATURAL, non prescription, INSTANT ( crosses blood brain barrier in 20mins!! !) and easy to source!

Here are a couple of links that may help! One for PS and the other for behaviour. Good luck!

I used to take it when I was younger, but I was taken off of it because of what it was doing to me. I was just getting even more depressed and angry, and I was gaining a lot of weight and I also got sick more often.

Drugs are never the answer for autism, my doctors put me on around 20-25 different medications for various reasons mainly because they were to stupid to realize I had autism. I can tell you right now that most drugs have no effect on autism and the best thing for you to do is the be loving, caring parent and work with your son.

Remember your the parent your in charge of protecting your son if something the doctor is saying does not sound right don't listen they are humans no gods.

what do you mean good luck? these drugs only sedate the brain and your child, you would be better getting you child into social skill therapy and nutritional therapy.

Yeah nightbender is 100% right anyways social skills last a life time, and the affects of prolonged exposer to a nutritious diet last a life time too. The positive affects of drugs last as long as you take them not a very permeant solution.

And the negative effects of those drugs last years after you stop taking them...

Risperdal can cause muscle twitching that continues even after the drug is stopped. I would not consider it.

Public school caused my child to have depression, severe anxiety, OCD, and he appeared quite loopy in that environment. I didn't put him on any drugs and the emotional problems went away when I removed him from public school. He still has ASD, but he's happy without the drugs :D

take your son off those drugs. They are causing his problems. It should be done at about 5-10% dosage reduction per ssri and mood stabilizer and benzos every two to 4 four weeks or when you children genuinuinely feels better. nueroleptics 2-5%
This should be done with the aid of a naturopath supplementing you child follewed by long term naturopathic treatment.
