I've finally got a meeting on Wednesday to give approval for the school professionals to evaluate my 8 year old. Things should speed up soon :D.

Third grade is exceptionally difficult on him, and this has been in the works for over a year now. More, really, getting diagnosis and all that, going back and forth.

He has one for speech already in effect since Kindergarten, so we had just kind of thrown bathroom reminders and watching his food intake into that. More though, now we need to work with the neurologist and it seems that all the professionals are playing nicely and something nice should be in motion very soon.

I am optimistic on this front.

Det

It has made a world of difference having an IEP in place for my son. How much it helps (or does not help) varies a lot by school, district and state, but, for us, it has been all good. Among other things, I have a point person at the school for helping with issues.

Congratulations on making progress, and best of luck to all of you.

IEP's , if they're followed, help tremendously..........try to be patient. it sometimes takes way too long for the system to actually implement changes that were outlined in the IEP

Patience :D haha, you are talking to someone who has "contemplated" trying archery for 3 years and will most likely decide to try it next year in the fall.

I'm seeing progress, it's been a little slow, but I'm seeing it. I moved to this school district because of it's ratings and the helpfulness of it's staff. It was the greatest of a couple prerequisite for purchasing this house. (besides I graduated from there. Ironically one of my former teachers/ who used to go to school with my step-father; is the principle. He's a great guy, and in his position, it seems, solely because he cares about children.)

I got to meet the school psychologist the last meeting, and I think he might have some "disorder" or another. There was a very awkward moment when culturally speaking he should have offered his had to shake, but instead hugged his folder to himself tightly. Other than that it went well. I think I took him a little off balance as well, he came in expecting to convince me that a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome would fall under the subheading of Autism. I finally stopped him and said "Yes, I fully realize that Asperger's Syndrome, defined as an Autism Spectrum Disorder does indeed fall under the category of Autism, and furthermore I fully expect a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome with a comorbid of ADHD and reference to OCD tendencies to be faxed to your office this following Monday." He just kind of blinked at me and handed me a fax number. It was funny.

They are being pretty understanding with my 8 year old in the intermittim, we are just at a little of a stand still until things get a little further in motion.

UPDATE:

We have the IEP in place now!

My child gets:
25 percent extra time on assessments (including state and district ones)
The option to take tests and assessments in a smaller group with less distractions with frequent breaks.
Extra time to formulate verbal responses (he has up to a 20 second delay between questions and giving answers at times)
2 days a week for 30 minutes he will be visiting with the speech pathologist
3 days a week for 30 minutes he will be visiting with the LD teacher to practice making paragraphs (couldn't make a paragraph for the life of him), Social niceties (the first thing they are tackling is greetings and farewells, he's like the guy at the office who doesn't function without coffee and just grunts at you.)
On homework our time limit is one hour, if it looks like it's going over it we just write in and say we used all our time, on math he does every other question and reading counts he has to do less of the questions (at least until we get that paragraph thing down.) He still gets the normal 15-20 minute a night reading assignment (but he enjoys it, so I told them to keep it.)

My goodness, me too. My little guy almost never has anything interesting to report from school, but he had a 10 minute diatribe on the school psychologist's coffee mug. He loved it. haha

Hope it all works out well!

And remember, when it becomes apparent something needs tweaking, just ask for it. Needs do change.
