Dear Aspies
Can you inform me who are responsables for the certification of Asperger syndrome the pedoneurologues or the pedopsychiatres?
In our country the medecines propose the treatments with Risperidonen (antiphychotic) for simples symptomes of Asperger as echolalias, repetition e.t.c
Are there data if the Risperidone is favour for diminution of echolalias sympotomes or for repetitions phrases?
Thanks
Themis

In the US Aspergers is readily diagnosed by family doctors, child psychologists, and by people who are totally unqualified to make such diagnosises (social workers and school counselors). I recommend a diagnosis be sought from psychologists and centers who are specialists in the autism field.

In the US it's common for children to be given medication for many sorts of things, mostly because the parents demand it. People need to be reminded that there is no cure for autism spectrum disorders, and simply supressing the symptoms while your child is on the medication will not help them learn to cope with adult life. Also, most medications are not approved or tested on children, so at this time these poor kids are just being used as guinea pigs for the pharmaceuticals.

our son was dxed by a neuropsych. there are plenty of meds out there that will reduce anxiety symptoms associated with aspergers. there aren't any meds that are specifically for aspergers, though

I want to echo Mage on resisting medication. It is a mask, not a real treatment, and should be used only as a last resort, if your child is unable to cope. Most AS symptons can be controlled by correcting the environment the child faces, instead of trying to change the child. That is, by far, the preferred approach - to find the environmental triggers and mitigate them.

I personally do not see the speech issues you mention as something to medicate against, or that medication will be effective for. The common treatment for echolia, repitition and other speech issues is to work with a speech therapist.
