Problem solving and lateral thinking
This is not meant to patronise or generalise, only to be helpful.
I do think that some parents may need to brush up on their problem solving and lateral thinking when looking at problem that arise with AS children.
Best way to do rational deduction is to detach yourself from your emotional relationship with the child/subject, while you are working things out, and try and make neutral observations based on facts.
Have you fully understood the situation? You might not, you may never.
Are you jumping to conclusions?
How you considered all the possible and probable reasons?
Are you applying some/any solution in the absence of the being a solution?
Self influence is a big problem with human observation especially observation about ourselves or other animals. You can never insulate yourself from it, but you can discard unsubstantiated projections.
i'm sure i can speak for most parents on here by saying that we realize this is true.......it is , however, very difficult to be objective when it's your own child. I teach in a special ed setting- I can help students through just about whatever crisis or meltdown that occurs.......as for my own child, I sometimes become too emotionally involved & worried....
That's good, maybe you could ask a colleague or try to get into special ed mode.
It is good to practice critical thinking though, because whether you are talking to a colleague or posting here it easy to slip into quite a weighted view because you might get angry, frustrated, scared.
Critical thinking has to start with just facts and only. If you are starting with hearsay, superstitions, gut feelings it can really taint the process from then on, because, that is what the human mind does fill in gaps and fabricate things. It is not deliberate, but it is not good.
Not only does the filling in the gaps lead to fabrications and superstitions, what happens is that they then fell need to fill in the gaps between the different superstitions and fabrication and so on. Then it become like a kind of paranoia, there is always a need to feed the superstition.
