My son has to have a tooth pulled at the dentist. Since the gas does not work for him and he can be hypersensitive to pain, this may be quite an ordeal. Does anyone have any good techinques to relax or distract at the dentist? Thank God the dentist is unfailingly patient with him, as well as his staff.

Gas isn't the only type of anasthesia.

Our kids dentist brings a professional in once a month to deal with those kids
that need to be put under.

just be glad he's not being asked vague questions in a cold, distant room. good stuff, man. :P

see if they'll allow him to listen to music.

My son has to be put under just for fillings. The first time he went to the dentist to get his teeth cleaned he wouldn't let them touch him so they just gave him a tooth brush and counted his cavities. Now that he's two years older he thinks the dentist is a blast but still asks to be asleep if there are any needles involved.

When I was younger I got valium, and then I got an IV which put me totally out for the whole thing. He'll need to go to an oral surgeon for that though, and it will be a lot more expensive.

I am not a parent but I would like to say, perhaps having him put to sleep for the operation would be the best solution that way he doesn't have a bad experience which could cause him problems with the dentist in the future.

I haven't gone to the dentist in a long time but because of my attempted suicide I probably would not be a good candidate for anesthesia
