My husband and I recently went to talk to a therapist about my 14 year old stepson with AS. After discussing many issues with her, she said that he needs more specialized therapy and possibly in home services like he had when he was younger. She is supposed to call us with some recomendations but hasn't yet. So I wondered if anyone on here knows of services like this for a teenager? I have always known about early intervention services but have never heard of them for older kids. I think it would be extremely helpful for him to have someone who could come to our house and help him with behaviors. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

I have heard of an in home therapist for a 16 year old with severe autism but not for a teen with AS. You will also want to be careful as an in-home therapist may not be covered under insurance and you may need to apply for funding through the county/state.

In Florida, we have what is called the med waiver program, but to qualify for that, one must receive SSI or SS disability.

He does have full insurance coverage through medicaid.

Now I don't want to jump to conclusions here because I know everyone is different.

But just how severe is your son that he needs specialized services? I received the diagnosis around the same age as he was and I pretty much resisted any kind of "services" they forced on me. All in all I turned out all right.

I just want to know what the mentality behind the therapist is.

In my community, there are many great programs and services for teens, in addition to children and adults, that exist through
the Kelberman Center for Autism. There is a special school for older kids called "Trade Winds" for kids that cannot attend a
regular school. There are also, many social groups and activities. During the summer months, kids ages 5 to 15 can attend an
"Awesome Summer Camp" Program.

I don't know where you live but, in Central New York State between Albany and Syracuse, New York where the Kelberman
Center for Autism is located, kids with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome are very lucky to live here.

Oh...and yes, the therapists provide interventional services for kids that need it.

If you would like to learn more, check out the their website...just Google: KELBERMAN CENTER FOR AUTISM
