There have been many surveys (often with dubious methodology) claiming that chess makes kids smarter. I spend most of my life teaching chess to kids whose parents believe this - and have also written an interactive chess teaching website for kids.

Has this been proven? If so, which experiement has proven it? Was the scientific method used? In your experience teaching kids chess, have you seen any evidense that chess increases people's IQ?

It's also been claimed that listening to Mozart makes kids smarter but with little real evidence.

Why only kids? Why is the evidense not sufficient to prove that it is true?

What exactly do you mean by playing 3D chess over the internet? Do you mean playing three-dimentional chess on a three-dimentional board (8x8x8 squares) or playing boring old two-dimensional 64-square chess using 3D graphics?

No, I do not mean playing 3d chess on a 8x8x8 board. I already have software for that available in the repositories I use :) I'd be glad to play the game with you if you'd like to. I meant software that allows me to play chess across a network such as the internet, lan, or vpn that with 3d graphics similar to this Linux screensaver with other human players who also have the same game software.

Do you want to play against humans or software? In real time or by email? If you can explain exactly what you want to do I can probably advise you.

I want to play in real time, not email. I want to play against humans (friends and anyone on who has posted on this thread). Yahoo games allows me to do this, but the graphics really suck, and they are not in 3d. The software is a java applet, so it is not the best.

I enjoy chess more than any other game (except Forgotten Hope for BF1942 and (soon) BF2) .

I play at pogo.com using the nickname of motor00head . I used to play competitively but don't have time for that now . My highest USCF rating was about 1500 but in doing some research found that a not so friendly TD submitted incorrect results for me in my first 2 tourneys . Nice guy huh? I can still play at 1500-1600 USCF but my play is inconsistent . I'd be happy to meet any of you at pogo.com for a 20-30 min game . Tal and Kasparov are my favorite players to study . Tal showed us that all is not what it seems , Kasparov (and Fischer) taught us that it is .

Sure, I'd play chess with you on pogo.com, but even more than that, I'd like to play BTF2 over a hamachi virtual private network. I can host a computer on an overclocked dual core amd 64 bit 3800+ w/ 2 gb of ddr memory in dual channel and 8800 gts, 2 serial ata 3.0 gb/s 640 gb of hard drive space, and a fiber optics connection that you should get very good ping with. My server is cracked, so you don't need to buy BTF2 to play.

I found a chess game. I just knew it was good because it is the most popular here at mininova (most seeds and peers) http://www.mininova.org/tor/975767 You could download for free without buying by using software such as www.utorrent.com and depending on which country you live in, it will be legal.

If anyone is interested in playing together, say so. If we get enough people, we can have tournaments.

I would like to learn how to play well, so I bought a book called Logical Chess: Move by Move by Irving Chernev. I downloaded a chess program onto my cell phone, but I kept getting beaten on easy level because I was clueless on what I was supposed to be doing. I probably will get John Dunn's Tactical Chess after I labor through this one. Any other recommendations or do you guys simply know how to play well without instruction?

If you want to learn or improve chess visit my website chessKIDS academy. Written mainly for young kids but can be used by anyone. It takes you from learning the moves through to adult club standard.

I play on the Internet Chess Club where my handle is falseknight (mostly 1-minute - very badly - at present). Happy to talk to or play any WP members on there.

moo_cow, I'll look up the references to papers on the educational value of chess when I have time but I'm very busy for the next week or so.

Don't you want better software for chess? How could you play chess over email when there is software with amazing 3d graphics and networking?

Sorry, but no. I hate using 3d graphics on a 2d screen. I prefer somewhere I can play strong opponents and talk to my chess playing friends and pupils.

I'm afraid I'm not up to date with the latest technology.

At my age, there's no reason why I should be.

Wow this is an old thread. Since I haven't added to it though - yeah love it. I especially love playing against people better than myself, every arsekicking I take is a good opportunity to learn some new tricks.

Chess is the reason I live!

I play on FICS and RHP... Anyone?

Anyone thought of starting a 'wrongplanet' clan on RHP or something? But, you kind of need to subscribe which requires $$...

I paid $$, I'm happy, tournaments! WOOHOO!

I like to play chess but play it as a game and not a competition; for fun and not just to win. I only think two to three moves into the future and I mostly play defensively. I don't play very often but I have won a few games with absolute rookies. Id est, I'm not that good at it but at least above minimum.
