Has anyone ever played this before? It just came out on Wii Virtual Console and i'm thinking about downloading it. How does it compare with other RPG's of it's time? (I missed this one)

I actually played a bit of it on the SNES (or was it a different game I'm thinking of?)

Yes, it was one of the best RPGs on the SNES, and had a different feel from anything else Squaresoft was doing at the time. Only thing is, I think Paper Mario for the N64 is a little better. So if you haven't got that yet on VC, go for that first.

I've got Super Paper Mario, it's pretty good.

I've played through this game a few times. I first finished it when I was nine, during summer break, and it was an amazing experience. I loved the graphics and music, and it was an easy game to step into. Plus, it has my favorite story, characters, and settings in the Mario series.

Super Mario RPG probably has the best SNES graphics after three Donkey Kong Country games and Yoshi's Island.

Super Paper Mario is good too, but it's not really the same type of gameplay that the previous games had, it's more platformer than RPG. Fantastic all the same, I love most everything that Intelligent Designs do.

It's a pretty cool game, though I never did beat it. Really like the music in it, and I've always liked the battle system, especially the little refinements they added to the series over the years.

Paper Mario 64 was cool too, but I thought the wild-goose-chase segment of the game was a bit too lengthy (get this item, give to person, who rewards you with item you have to give to another person, etc. etc.).

I downloaded Mario RPG and got my first taste of the game about an hour after it was released via Virtual Console. I've gotta tell ya, it's quickly become one of my favorites games of all time. Admittedly, it is rather easy, but I feel that's one of it's charms. It's the perfect blend of Nintendo's platformer-design skills and Square's mastery of RPGs. I've played every Mario RPG, and the only one I can honestly say I dislike is Mario&Luigi: Partners in Time for the DS.

For only 800 Wii Points, I'd download this right away, especially if you enjoyed either of the two Paper Mario titles (not counting Super Paper Mario, as I don't really view that as an RPG, per-se).

It started the whole "time button presses to deal more damage/reduce damage you receive" deal that the Mario RPGs exhibit, and unlike most turn-based RPGs, different weapons actually play differently. I personally can't wait to battle a really cool secret boss, who I'm not sure whether or not could be considered spoilers, despite holding no significance to the game's plot.

You must mean Culex, the fella who has Final Fantasy IV battle music during his fight and looks like an esper from FFVI? I wouldn't consider that a spoiler.

I don't really consider him spoilers either, but I don't think anyone who doesn't know much about the game expects a boss like him.

i still have my original Mario RPG cartridge. the SNES had some of the best RPG's of all time and Mario RPG is definitely in the top ten. Nintendo and Squaresoft really had a great partnership going. too bad Square decided to go over to Sony and everything started sucking (hard!).
