Do you have any retro video gaming stores where you live?

There's also the emulators. I played around with an Amstrad emulator a few years back and it worked perfect and there was lots of game disk (or tape :-p) images to find online too. I've tried an Gameboy emulator that worked very well too, and I think you can find emulators for all arcade games and home computers ever made except for a few of the newest generations (for instance the DS emulators available atm does not work). Google "zx spectrum emulator", "atari emulator" or whatever computer emulator you are looking for and you'll probably be surprised how many old computers that has been emulated. If it's DOS stuff you want then go for DOSBox (a DOS emulator :-P) and then search for abandonware. Tons of the old DOS classics are available for free too.

I can recommend the classic gaming site's game museum for many of the old arcade games (Google classic gaming because I'm not allowed to post hyperlinks in here because of some spam policy).

Emulators fall into the same category at the virtual console-- well actually the virtual console IS emulation. (they even use the iNES header, which is hilarious)

It's just not the same. No box art, no artifacts, no slamming a cart into an ancient system, no anything.. In fact for the NES games you miss out w/ the composite artifacts. Plus it's not cost effective to collect virtual console games. Right now I have just about every Sonic The Hedgehog game on my shelf, in box with manual, & each probably cost me around $2 each..

Well there is nothing like trying to use a frustrating piece of old hardware, like my NES has a problem where the power keeps flickering, unreliably might mess up all of a suden, and I can get hand cramps from a not very ergonomic controler. But it is kind of fun haveing the colection of old cartridges. Sad that aparently the catridges and some of the old cartridges can be damaged by enviroment.

Do used game stores count?
If so there are a few close to where I live, they sell new games, but they have a ton of oldies too.

Sometime last year I broke down and bought an N64 at Game Crazy, they sell old retro systems in there (stopped selling retro Nintendo soon after I bought that). I had a small few N64 games from my last system that I had when I was younger that had broke. Still the best system in my opinion. Even bought another game for it off of Ebay.

But no actual stores around here that specialize in retro gaming. Even Goodwill will carry the occasional PS1, but no games. (I do like to buy my vinyl music there, however)

But if you're desperate, do what I did, go on Ebay, I even bought a SNES system from them.

I know there's a place like that in Austin, but I forgot what part of town it's in, and I forgot the name.

Something things need to be left dead and buried I've just got a copy of the (Xbox 360) " Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection" and I'm at pains to say (Sega fan boy) man did it suck. Actually I prefer modern games again at pains to say I've become slightly disillusioned , it almost feels like where entering a end of life Megadrive era . We need a PS1 moment to shake things up., that's unlikely to ever happen again :(

Often I tire of gaming at the end of it's platform life cycle , may be take a break,? any one else feels the same way?

Hope it's not age related  , age is not on my side.........

There is a "Sputnik" store not far from where I live, you can catch some old stuffs there. But I don't have a lot of money so I prefer using emulators. Also my snes controllers are in pretty bad shape, so I can't play the A Link to the Past that I buy in that store about one and half years ago.

The only place I know is Play & Trade whatever that store is called at the Beaverton Mall. They go back to the Atari 2600 days. Then there is GameTrader but they don't have much old games and there is Game Crazy and they also don't have any old games.

There's a chain around here called Vintage Stock that sells as far back as 5th generation (PS1/Saturn/N64), and I've heard 4th generation (SNES/Genesis) as well, but I've only been in there once, and only briefly (I didn't get to browse), so I don't know what all they sell. There might be some indie stores around here that sells older stuff, but I haven't looked into it since I returned to the KC area just over a year ago.

Of course, there's a Video Games section on Craigslist, which is usually good for some pretty obscene deals.
