I am curious to see how this community views/handles ganking.

When i was younger, i was always the peacefull Rp'er/adventurer that wanted to go out and explore the gameworld in peace and did not harm anyone. I had only done some PvP against a friend that i sent my pet (in WoW) against and he did surprise attacks against me to, all in a fun spirit to "liven up the game".

But at a later stage and in another game, i tried out ganking by shooting some random guy (totally innocent one) from a safe location so he would not know who did it - and I LOVED it.

I now also started to gank people here and there, some for no reason at all just because it was fun. Sure, i still level up, do tradeskilling, raid and explore and all that usual peacefull stuff, but at times i just want to camp an area and gank everything that moves. I especially love it when some lvl 30-40 gets escorted and is "protected" by 2-3 level 70's - but i am still able to gank them and get away unharmed.

Personally, i do not think it is a big deal, especially in games like WoW where you die and end up at the graveyard. In other games, you may drop items/gold and it actually "HURTS" to get killed in the game and people play more responsibly (i think) in those games, which is a big difference to WoW.

The Question:

Do you gank people in online MMORPG games, or do you play peacefully, or on a specific PvE server even?

And please, no "Carebear"/"Gankers are a-holes" talk, i respect both sides and so should you.

I would also like to extend the topic to what you think about PvP systems in different games and your ideas on what kind of system could work for both PvP/PvE players.

Thanks.

I usually play rather peacefully but it's not uncommon for me to just go on the warpath randomly and attack Redridge or something for fun. I don't camp though, I usually kill everyone and move on to a different area.

Sometimes. It depends on the game really. In WoW I only do it occasionally but I have strict limits on when/who. I don't go out of my way to attack other players but if they are around my level (5 levels different or so) and I feel your a threat, your gone. But when I do gank I never corpse camp. Getting killed by higher levels happens and all you can do is shrug if off and learn to avoid it. But when 3 level 80's camp a level 72's corpse, that's lame.

No, I don't gank.

Oh I'm sure all he needed to do is read his combat log to know who did it. What you mean though, is you were up on a building or up a cliff or something where you could kill him, but he couldn't kill you, right?

You can get banned for doing that.

Also, keep in mind that your reputation may suffer because of your actions. If you frequently kill people who are lower level than you, you may be seen, both horde and alliance side, as a poorly skilled bully who is incapable of winning a fight against someone your own level.

No.

And there is no combatlog in Neocron and there are rifles with a loooong range.

Generally, if you are not directly exploiting the game mechanics to get an unfair advantage its all good. Hiding behind a tree after firing a few shots to make yourself "invisible" or using a stealthdevice to become invisible is definitly not exploiting.

Doesn't "gank" mean "steal"?

Which I guess makes sense, if you kill PCs to loot them.

I hate being ganked, so I generally just move about in WoW peacefully. But when some douchebag rogue who is a few levels lower than me thinks it would be funny to stealth and sap me on my death knight, knowing full well he wouldn't dare attack me, I will find him and kill him. I usually try to unstealth them with my Death and Decay, but generally if the rogue is a few levels below me I can see him anyway. Though I call them douchebags for doing this, I know I used to do it as well. My "main" is a level 80 rogue and I used to love doing that and then hiding off somewhere obscure to keep the AoEs from unstealthing me. I guess the best thing about having a rogue for a main that I have done that with is that I usually have a good idea where to set off my Death and Decay AoE to unstealth them. Then I will pop Army of the Dead and let them take care of him. Or smack him around a bit until I have enough Runic Power and send a Gargoyle after him. I am having fun with my DK right now, but it's far from my favorite class. My rogue is still my favorite, and I stopped playing my hunter when I started my rogue a year or so ago. I leveled the hunter to level 70 and haven't played him since, though since they have received some nice upgrades over time I might bring him out of retirement and level him to 80 as well. Since my DK is 80 now, besides raids and such, it's gotten rather boring.

Because I'm a poor little kid, I play runescape. I target usually ones easy to kill, yes.
