What is your favorite gaming genre and why? Also, what is one game you like that exemplifies it?

My favorite genre is a cross between FPS and RTS. It's a nice balance between being involved in the action, and sitting back and letting your commanded units do the fighting for you. And if you don't know by now, my favorite games the exemplify this genre are Battlezone and Battlezone II: Combat Commander. They're both great games with excellent FPS action which seemlessly integrated command controls that can be used while you're still fighting. It's sort of like a giant game of chess, played in hovering tanks, in space, and against Russians, Chinese, and aliens, except the actual mission objectives are very general, and the maps are very open, so you get to choose your own strategy and pacing, therefore the missions are never really played out the same way twice. The only thing that never really changes is that you usually start out with next to nothing, and so the natural mechanics of the game make missions begin with emphasis on the FPS part of the gameplay, which slowly shifts to RTS by the end as you build more.

Here's a download link for BZ1 if anybody wants to try it: http://www.battlezone1.net/home/page_7/ ... index.html

I love RPGs, always have since the genre was invented on the computer and home console. But story driven RPGs are my favorite. Good examples being Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest VIII, and Vagrant Story.

RPGs for me. Especially ones where I have to complete a lot of things, like getting all the entries for a bestiary, or item catalog, or even catch all monsters or learn all the techniques.

What, you mean there are different genres other than "Fallout 3"? :D

I like shooters with RPG elements and turn based strategy games.

I like adventure games like Tomb Raider, Metroid, Legend of Zelda. I love getting stuck and having to solve puzzles because even when I'm not playing, I'm still thinking about how to solve a puzzle. FPS's today are a mess and RPG's, well, if they have no story or a thin one, I don't find them worth playing. Especially turn-based rpg's and jrpg's. I'm okay with Western rpg's if they're like KOTOR or Mass Effect.

I'd have to say for me as far as genres, it's a mix-up between RPG, FPS and MMORPG with a bit of simulation on the side. :)

I went with hybird, because all my favorite games seldom fit into a single genre. Though if I had to chose, I'd say I've loved the adventure type games the most. Zelda, Metriod, Eternal Darkness etc. are all games I consider to be in the adventure genre.

Anything where the emphasis is on exploration and problem solving=adventure imo.

I've been playing competitive RTS for a while, do a lot of total war and other strategy, and a lot of modding/beta testing thereof.

All of them depending on what game it is, i don't seclude myself to just one genre.

RTS is a contradiction in terms, and should be replaced by RTT.

Not that it's ever going to happen, but it just bugs me... strategy is not real time, more or less by definition.

My favourite genre is turn-based tactical, which doesn't appear so I voted "other."
