Apparently the combat system in the PC version is going to be largely unchanged. It's the console versions that are receiving the main overhaul in mechanics.
The dialogue wheel from ME is making an appearance, but with an added mechanic. An icon in the middle of the wheel will indicate the 'tone' of the selected response (which presumably will be paraphrased like in the ME series). So the icon will tell you if the response you're highlighting is angry, flirty, sarcastic, etc. Good for Aspies!
The loss of race selection is annoying but if it allows Bioware to tell a story that's more concerned with who the protagonist is rather than what he is, that can be a good thing. Just look at Planescape: Torment. It's likely they'll take this route, considering the plot seems to be about Hawke's rise to power rather than the 'defeat of an ancient evil' stock plotline. The plot is meant to span 10 years, which if done right (I.E more in-depth than the Fable series, for example), could be amazing.
At the moment, Hawke's story reminds me a lot of the Conan the Barbarian novels.
