I've been playing it for the past few hours. I've always wanted to get this game because I immensely enjoyed the first one, and also because I don't think we have enough wild west themed games. The only recent western game that I'm aware of is the Call of Juarez games, which I didn't really care for, but it's good to finally see a good game set in the old west.

It's really fun. There's a lot to do, with the typical western tropes that you can take part of like capturing bounties and playing poker in the saloon (Which I heard that you can cheat, but I haven't tried that yet.), but what makes the game really cool is how unpredictable it can be with it's random events. I was riding back into town, and then I heard a woman crying for help, so I rode by and she said that she needed a ride home. What I didn't see coming was her throwing me off of my horse and then stealing it for herself! Luckilly, I gunned her down (When she was a mile away with my horse no less) and got my horse back, but that really caught me by surprise. It's just one of those little things that make the game world feel alive.

So far, it's shaping up to be a mighty fine game.

Did Rockstar finally fix the clumsy controls and horrible framerates they have in all GTA-engined games? ;)

Framerate is pretty decent from what I've seen. Controls do take some getting used to though since it set up much differently than a lot of the typical cover based shooters out there.

I so want to play this... but I don't have the money for games right now. :(
I enjoyed the GTA games and I mild obsessive interest with wild west stuff... so, :?

I'm going to try to rent RDR this weekend. The graphics look great and the gameplay seems interesting. There's not many western games out there so hopefully it is good.

The whole lasso a nun thing has a big stigma on it but if I were catholic I'd care more. Have any of you guys gotten the dastardly achievement/trophy? Because that is just a terrible terrible thing to do.

I've been playing it for a few hours and am really enjoying it. I did a few missions and now I'm just exploring and hunting a bit. I like the controls better than in GTA IV but that is, of course, a matter of opinion.

I don't think framerate drops will be an issue as there is much less going on on screen than in GTA IV's Liberty City (buildings, traffic, explosions).

Having lots of fun with this at the moment. I love being a hunter, tracking prey and collecting skins and meats to sell. I'm looking forward to taking on a bear one day. Lassoing and taming my first wild horse was cool, too, but 20 minutes later I was attacked by wolves in the night and my new horse was killed. It was sad, but cool at the same time since it was an unscripted AI-driven event that made the world feel more believable.

The mark of a good open-world game is when it generates unique, unexpected moments that you can tell your friends about later, and so far Red Dead has done pretty well in that regard. I'm betting the open-ended side of the multilayer has a lot of surprises too, but I'm a little intimidated to go jumping in to that just yet.

I definitely recommend doing the 'I Know You" stranger missions since they disappear once you finish the main storyline, and doing then gives some good foreshadowing to future events in an interesting way.

RDR is one of my two Games of the Year (Mass Effect 2 being the other). Excellent game from start to finish. I really connected with John Marston and his story; I found him one of the most endearing gaming protagonists in recent history.

I strongly reccommend playing through the singleplayer before exploring the multiplayer. The singleplayer exposes you to the various different mechanics and places in the RDR world in a very well-paced manner, and playing too much of the multiplayer first would ruin that. For example, the first time John enters Mexico is a wonderfully atmospheric moment in the singleplayer, which would be spoiled if the player were to have already run all across the country in the multiplayer.

Thanks for the good advice... I'll go through single player first. Just got my 1st plat trophy the other day on the saboteur, wish it had multiplayer. But that's for a diff thread.
