Not playing one at the moment, a few MMORPGs i've played are Fallen Earth, World of Warcraft, Aion and Diablo II.
Always loved the storylines and the ambience and that being my main reason to play, but was never into the social (in my experience, almost manditory) part...

What is/are your main reason(s) for playing games from this genre?

Control. Not over the world, but through the world.

That's a poorly though-out reaction, but my first (and likely correct?) impulse.

Primarily the same reason for which I would play any other game. To experience what is available and unleash my mind into the world.

Currently playing Star Trek Online. I know some of you guys think it's not so great, but I love it. Getting into some epic battles with a bunch of Klingon or Gorn ships with a fleet of fellow Starfleet ships is amazing. I like the way you can customize ships and you can get some really wild setups. A TOS Constitution class cruiser with disruptors is cool and with the quantum torpedoes and decent shields is really a great way to take out some bad guys... The character customization is great and the uniform customization is excellent as well

Friends. It's difficult to stay on any MMORPG for long without any.

I felt really close to my FFXI linkshell, and that was the only real reason the game was any good to me. The story and the music were also really good, but my linkshell (basically a guild in FFXI) is what made the really grindy gameplay worth it.

I think WoW is a much better game, but I've never felt the same way about a WoW guild, and I don't know if that's because I'm more reluctant to talk in games now than I used to be or because the community is different or because I never did any real endgame stuff or whatever.

So it's hard to stay in WoW for long because no one I know from outside the game plays for more than a few months. I rejoined over the summer for the first time since the beginning of TBC and had played for almost two months when my two friends (who were coincidentally on the same server) quit in the space of a week and a half. Soon after, I decided not to renew my subscription, even though it's easier than ever to enjoy the game without friends due to Dungeon Finder.

I think I kinda made a mistake in joining after the last major patch of the expansion, though; I missed the giant virtual crowds at the Auction House in Ironforge in Vanilla, and I guess most people probably exhausted themselves on all of the WotLK content, so, with or without friends, I'm going to play again when Cataclysm comes out, hoping to see the community maybe a little more re-energized. Cataclysm looks awesome, so I imagine a lot of people are going to be back for at least a couple of months.

I play World of Warcraft (for the Alliance!! !) because it's the only place i can interact with people (or the virtual version of people).
although i have not bin having that much fun latley, only two friends (in game friends) i played with aren't there any more.

I've only played one MMORPG - mostly for the story. Currently waiting for another one to come out - entirely for the story. So, yeah..

I used to play them as a way to keep in touch with and "interact" with my friends, from whom I lived very far away.

I play an MMORPG because I can fully express myself with my character. And also, IRL is sometimes so boring or unfair that I have to find something else.

I like having the opportunity to compare myself with other players and to get the respect I so deserve. When I played Kal Online I was the "Tactics Leader" and Sub-Leader of the 47Ronins. 47Ronins was considered to be a noob guild because the level requirements to join were really low and once you got past a certain level you'd want to move to a guild with higher leveled players. However during my "reign" average levels went from 20s to 40s in a matter of weeks. I got major respect because I was the single driving force behind that increase. Then I got demoted and quit the guild because the guild leader got 2 complaints about me being bossy and argumentative. Half the guild quit overnight, some went to higher level guilds, some of them quit the game slightly after, some stayed loyal to their less capable leader and some followed me to the guild I started, Truth. Average levels in 47Ronins returned to 20s, average levels in Truth peaked at around 45-47. We ended up in an alliance with 47Ronins twice during "war" where I was again unofficially named as "tactics leader" because everyone knew, I was THE MAN.

My anti social nature carries over to the gaming world as well. When I play video games, I don't want to have to deal and interact with other people so I don't play multiplayer games at all.

I've actually enjoyed MMOs (Yes, I am a WoW player, and have been so since 2005). I started out solo in the game, then I was involved in a guild (my brother introduced me, and we were in the same one for a while). I then made my own for a time (which fell apart due to pre-BC raid dramas). I then hopped around on a few other servers before settling into an RP realm and the atmosphere has been much more appreciative and calm. I did mostly PvP throughout BC, and started doing dungeons/raids with Wrath. I find myself drawn to the players, the RP characters (when I can find good ones), and now the groupings for instances (which i did everything i could to avoid for the longest time). There is some social interaction, sure, but it's just through typing or ventrilo which takes out some of the stress for me when dealing with others. If someone pisses you off, just add them to the ignore list. If someone has been helpful and shows interest in future dealings, add to friends. If a guild is doing a run, you fill a spot, and do a good job, you get a guild and some of it's perks along the way (as they get to know you). Id say it makes for a good social scenario given that i don't have to worry much about non-verbal interaction (still get lost with some sarcasm tho  ).

I used to play one of the lesser known ones for a while. It was useful, as it let me observe people doing stuff and practice socialisation without having to go outside. It was kind of fun, I used to enjoy (anarchically) organising raids and resources and talking to people. But then it devolved into rubbish, the developer went all weird, and the community was full of whining poo heads. It felt like a job after a while. In hindsight, I should have quite about 6 months before I did, but I was an addict.

Can I say Socializing with Comrades and playing "this armor makes my character look good?" Meh. Oh well. Oh and unless the mmo has "farming" friendly. I usually just farm loot and make ingame currency for no reason.

This is kind of the same thing for me. Except that I play but I never interacted with others avatars, I am never entered in guilds or what so ever. And it is a place where you can do that without being an abnormal.
The bad side is that I can't always do all the quests (especially in Wow).

To experience the story as it grows, and pwning some noobs in the process.
