Nope. In my opinion, gaming is all about having fun with - and discovering new techniques for - the game that you like.

Well, to be a "gamer"... it's actually quite simple. You just gotta play Video Games to degree at which you are marked a "gamer" and with all do respect, it doesn't matter. Does That answer your question?

I don't tend to play FPS games that often either. Too many of the modern ones look the same, have the same colours (black, brown, muzzle flash) and some even have the exact same weapons (MW and Killzone 2 are good examples). I mostly prefer the more unrealistic ones, like UT or team fortress 2. There are however exceptions like the STALKER series and the battlefield series (though I mostly play for the vehicles :P)

Right now, my gaming habits are pretty much divided between STALKER: Call of Pripyat and Wipeout HD. Yes i'm a racing nut, mainly because racing games actually require skills, not just pure luck :)

I'd actually say that playing FPS's may make you *less* of a hardcore gamer, especially if you're the type to play all the newer-gen stuff, like Halo and CoD. FPS is most definitely in the popular realm now.

I tend to agree with your point, and it's pretty much why I tend to broaden my horizons to nearly everything from simple flash games to new popular games.

i'd say that playing a broad range of games makes you more of a gamer than confining yourself to a single genre as other game genres can teach new skills and strategies in especially tactical FPS games like CoD, especially the one skill of thinking on your feet and being able to think up new tactics on the go...

The above is the main reason why I like the Wipeout series that much. The games are fast, require a fair amount of strategy and gives you little time to think as well as little mercy when you screw up. The same goes for a fair lot of Flash games as they usually make up for lack of graphics by adding technical puzzles.

I enjoy FPSes as well, but I also like racing games, technically, the modern racing games like Forza 3, NFS Shift, Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4 CAN be classified as first person games, although in the non shooter category.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer, and I mainly stick to RPGs, sandbox games, simulations and strategy games. Anyone who says that you're not a gamer because you don't play games of the FPS genre is so far up their own rectal passage that they can see their own larynx. The ignorance!

If they play FPS games on consoles, which is quite likely given the kind of drivel they seem to have spewed on you, that makes it even worse. First Person Shooters are a terrible genre to play on consoles, with gamepad joysticks as a means of control being poorly designed for the kind of precision that is required. Virtually all console FPSs impose some degree of autoaim.
