Well I Just bought a new Playstation 3 yesterday, and I'm already having problems. I've had it for about 24 hours, and it refuses to connect to the internet. My laptop works fine, my other computer works fine.. hell , even my old ps3 works. I've tried just about everything, it keeps saying "An error occurred during communication with the server. This is a DNS error. (80710101) So now I'm left thinking, what are my options?

I do have Linksys, however turning the media server off didn't work either. I'm doing it wireless also so I can't hook it up to any Ethernet. I'm just going to wait a few days I guess..

Awesome. Time to vent a little.

F*CK SONY.

I was bored one night, messed around in Playstation Home. I guess I pissed off a few people. Next day, my whole PSN account was permanently banned. They screwed me out of $50 worth of online game purchases in the process. So I guess "bad conduct" in a game somehow justifies banning the whole damn account and losing everything. I did a little research on the subject and it turned out Sony bans people in the same manner over something as trivial as team killing in Call of Duty.

Also the OtherOS feature removal was complete bullcrap as well.

Sold the PS3, eventually got a Wii. Way more happier with that than I ever was with the PS3.

It was removed because people were using it to hack online games. The other OS allowed a person to cheat in a way that isn't glitching... as in they had access to wall hacks, aimbots, speedhacks, etc. which actually ruins a game experience. It's no fun to get shot through a wall :x

The only thing that comes to mind from the other stuff I read was... Have fun with the Wii :)

Regardless, it's still an inevitable aspect of online gaming. The report system works just fine. Why completely remove an advertised feature and ruin it for the rest of us honest-to-goodness tweakers/tech enthusiasts?

I don't know if you meant the last part sarcastically but it is indeed very fun, especially when it's softmodded.

It wasn't mean as sarcasm. I just meant since you had a bad experience with PS3 and found that you like the Wii better... have fun with what you like.

My Ps3 is so old its almost a PS2, AND its second hand, and it works fine. Just goes to show there are no hard and fast rules about reliability.

I hope you checked if your account was banned a few days later. During PS maintenance (and a few months back there was a very long maintenance period) there uses to be an error in that your PSN account would accidentally say it was permanently banned. And also, if you actually were banned you must have done something seriously wrong. The PS mods on community.eu.playstation.com have mentioned that there is quite a large amount of research that goes into permanently banning somebody and unless it's monitored they won't ban you permanently. I think it is far more likely you gameshared.

Also, I do disagree with your comment about the report system working fine. If it was fine you wouldn't have to go to a grief reporting website to use it, it would be accessible from the XMB. Also, I am almost positive that Other OS was actually Removed because Geohot found an exploit that let you play pirated games in it. I do agree though that the removal was horrible and I hope the lawsuit that was filed is a positive result for those who used it.

However, I am glad you enjoy the Wii. Much better that you have a system you prefer to use than a system you dislike.

I'm assuming you were referring to what I wrote on the first page. There were probably multiple conditions.

The main thing is I believe the consoles I had would overheat and blow out parts of them.

I at the time of burning out all of those, was playing on the old 360 consoles before they started making the new sleek looking ones (I don't know if the new ones are any better :?). But the old ones were prone to overheat... and even though I didn't keep getting the red ring, I started getting burnt out video cards and stuff... I'm guessing out of over heating.

Also I lived in a desert like area at the time of them all blowing out. As in it could get up to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside in my area (Sometimes up to 115 to 120 degrees outside... never inside)and my room would get pretty hot even with air conditioning.

Lastly I don't believe the 360 was ever designed for prolonged use (As in longer play results in a console building more and more heat). At least at the time of the consoles I had. I'd probably play 10 hours a day back when I was burning through those. Now I don't play that much (In comparison)... but I'm still a bit wary of my current 360 console.

The last thing I can guess is I probably had a bit of bad luck... that could be an understatement

The newer xbox 360s (Falcon, Jasper, slim) are much more reliable than the older ones. I've had two friends that have had an RRoD so far. One had bought a 1st gen 360 (Xenon) secondhand and it RRoD'd after a few months, after that he bought a new xbox 360 Jasper revision... he later sold it and got a ps3.

My other friend got a 360 core when they first came out, I had RRoD'd on him once and he fixed it with the towel trick... he rarely uses it anymore, but is saving up for a Kinect/360 slim bundle currently.

My own 360 (rev. falcon) has not RRoD'd on me ever, and i've taken great care with placement and not covering any airholes.

the first xbox 360s had about a 1 in 3 chance of RRoD'ing due to the most common design flaw: bad soldering on the CPU and GPU... The rest had harddisk and DVD reading issues.

Game-wise, IMO the 360 is good for FPS games, while the PS3 is good for pretty much everything else... the 360 controller is also better to hold for prolonged amounts of time as it is molded for average-sized hands... however the 360's user interface and customizability (limited to a wallpaper) sucks and it's usually not worth playing games online as many quickly die out with a few exceptions like halo 3, cod and so on...

a PS3 may be expensive at first, but it's heaps cheaper in the long run, especially when playing online. PSN also has lots more weekly offers compared to the 1 offer per week on XBL.

Both consoles are today as reliable as any other consumer electronics if you treat them right.

Nothing lasts forever. I have fried a PS3 and my 360 is circling the drain, but if I take the purchase price and divide it by the number of hours I have spent enjoying myself on either it comes out to pennies an hour and you can't get much better than that. Don't expect electronics to last forever and you won't be disappointed when they don't.

If you want something VERY reliable, get a Wii.

While you are at it forget about HD resolutions or playing anything with great characters and story line (exceptions include metroid)

Open your disc compartment and swab the damn laser. You've pretty much confirmed that Sony isn't going to help you on this (except maybe let you trade them + some $$$ for a refurbished model).

I really wish the 360 was more reliable, I haven't bought either one yet because of the reliability issues and Sony's previous pricing and worse selection of games. Like seriously I've been looking forward to Gran Turismo 5 for a year now and it's looking like Forza Motorsport 3 is better. One of the better earlier titles I wanted to play was Armored Core 4, a long time Sony exclusive...also available for the 360. Final Fantasy 13, Xbox.

Just plain f**k this generation of gaming. PC has DRM like hell, PS3 has been more focused on shooters like the original xbox was and while the xbox 360 no longer depends on FPSes and games ported to/from the PC to sell itself it, and Nintendo has just plain given up on trying to keep up.

The failure rate is OVER FIFTY PERCENT?!?!? That seals it then. Definitely a PS3.

I have both systems. Go for the PS3. My 360 Elite RRoD'd after a few months.

I've always liked Nintendo so I got a Wii when it came out. Never had any problems with it except there aren't any good games on it.
