Selling Xbox...

If I delete my gamertag from the system and everything on it.

Can I still retrieve my gamertag later on in life when I want to get another xbox and my DLC?

I went from an old xbox to the new one and I was able to transfer over everything...but then again, I did it via hard drive transfer...Not sure if you could just re-download your purchased content.

Yes you can recover your gamertag on a different console, and you can re-download all of your purchased DLC for free. But yes, as skafather84 says, it is so much easier and convenient with a hard drive transfer.
