terraria is like 2d minecraft with awesome combat and bosses. so basicly one is a 3d sandbox the other is a 2d sandbox. also with art style i was more refering to the outlines around the models in okami which suck the lines are to damn big and distracting. i hate cartoonsish 3d renders.

outstanding i wouldn't say that at all but whatever. i can hardly get hooked on almost any 2d game there is no atmosphere to me just a character running in front of a slideshow. in 3d games the world is all around you, you can go in any direction you please, games like fallout 3 and elder scrolls wouldn't be the same without that. to me 3d games have more depth. portal is the best example i know of the first game has virtually no story at all, you have no clue who you are and some disembodiment voice is talking to you. at first you suspect something is wrong even though you have no clue about any story at all. by the end you are praying for a way out of the hell hole.

only one character ever talks, glados who is also never seen till the very end. the game was thought to fail as soon is it was made but it didn't. but i have never been more effected by a game till i played portal. other games have effected me but to lesser extent. but as far as a game where the gameplay itself builds the story from nothing portal is the best example i can give. that to me is a work of art.

I wasn't talking about story, voice work or anything else. And I'm not saying everything else is s**t. We're not even talking about RPGs or (necessarily) puzzle games.

I miss that era too. The last game I can remember getting really excited about besides a shooter was Ikaruga.

The all-new "Shinobi" by Sega for the 3DS is great side-scroller where you play as a ninja, and I played through it on normal difficulty. It's supposed to be almost impossible to get through on the hardest difficulty level.

I don't miss sidescrollers, because I play them all the time. Look no further than the downloadable service on your system of choice. Heck, there's nothing wrong with checking out various re-releases of classic sidescrollers either, whether it's through a downloadable service, or a collection like Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. There's also the occasional new sidescroller released in physical form like Contra 4 for the ds(which I played and beat on normal, completed all the challenges, and loved every minute of). That is not exactly what I'd call a current example, but there's also Sonic Generations if you're in the mood for something current(I haven't picked it up, but I hear it's good).

I too hate the notion of a genre dying out if it's one I really enjoy, but I've found that that's not often the case. The jrpg is still around and even point and clicks have found their niche this gen. The only genre I think might have died out is survival horror, which seems to have been replaced with generic zombie slaying bloodfests that are more like survival action games mistakenly labeled as survival horror. Let's hope Silent Hill: Downpour ends up being a proper survival horror title. I hear Alan Wake is decent, but unfortunately, I don't have a 360, nor do I plan on getting one, and that was released a few years ago.

Plenty of fond memories of 2D side-scrollers. That was back when I was playing the "it" games and not relegating myself to the annual sports game rehashes and the classic collection discs. Nothing against 3D games. In fact, some of them I like (Mario 64). But the majority of them are just too complicated for me to spend too much time figuring out. That and the whole "growing-up-and-having-less-time-on-my-hands" thing prevents me from getting into the newer "it" games.

Most of the flash/Facebook games are 2D, aren't they?

These games are my current favorite 2d games.

Muramasa (Wii)
Strange Journey (DS)
Sands of Destruction (DS)
The World Ends with You (DS)
Mana Khemia (PS2)
Rayman Origins (multi-platform)
Odin Sphere (PS2)

I's say that the genre has actually seen a resurgence lately. There are plenty of sidescrollers available on dowloadable stores, and there have been quite a few 2D platformers very recently including Donkey Kong Country Returns, Rayman Origins, and Sonic Generations.

Exactly, the download industry (for cellphones etc.) as well as Facebook games.

2d games and side scrollers are only as dead as you make them. I play them all the time through emulators and basically have 30 years of video gaming all on my Android tablet. I can't play alot of those 3d games and it's like trying to learn a new language with these new 800 button controllers! I get more satisfaction from the original Castlevania and Donkey Kong than a game running on a 10000000ghz Blue Ray based optical system. Ok......maybe I'm going a little over board but give me an 8 bit or 16 and I'll be quite happy :)

I grew up playing 2D side-scrollers and I still like them. DrinkBox Studios released Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack (great game) and now they're coming out with Guacamelee which I really want.
