I did play EQ1 but I had some higher levels help me quite a bit. I also was in no rush to get max level, I was only a little kid at the time. Everything was just cool to look at at the time, that was enough for me, exploring new areas, especially that wood elf zone... Loved that.

I stopped playing when they made it so you couldn't play with classic WoW and had to buy and install every update including Cataclysm.

Guild Wars 2.

I played in the beta and the game is fantastic. It features an art-style very comparable to WoW's palate with updated graphics and evolutionary concepts. There's still a lot of hype surrounding the game but if you take it objectively rather than a Jesus Christ-like figure I think you'll find the experience worthwhile when the game ships August 28th. Just a quick throwdown of the main points that may appeal to you:

1. No holy trinity. Everyone can tank, dps, or heal as needed. This makes the combat fast and chaotic with skillful play rewarded rather than just looking at your UI and getting a rotation down. It also makes grouping more accessible. You also dodge manually, making situational awareness more than just "get out of the fire."

2. Dynamic Event system. While the central hubs in the map (denoted by hearts) are just thinly disguised quest hubs, the events that happen around them aren't telegraphed by NPC's with giant "!" over their heads and you'll be genuinely surprised by the things that can happen in any given zone. Farms come under attack from bandits, bulls rampage through the land stirring up nasty swarms of bees and an NPC might just embark on a journey for supplies that ends in a giant wave of enemies. If these events fail the bandits stay there and might even launch an attack at a nearby outpost because no one helped the farmers, the NPC that wanted those supplies goes out by himself and dies, and so on.

3. While doing these events you can seamlessly, wordlessly play with other people. These mechanics and the mobs and resources you gather are everyone's plaything. With GW2 you won't look at another player and think "Damn it, he's here to steal my kills! Arrghhh!" You'll think "Hey, another guy. This'll be more fun now because we can help each other and be rewarded all the same."

4. Personal story. While not as dialogue heavy as SWTOR, I found that the story gets the job done and by the end of my beta experience I was actually motivated to learn more about the plot. You can make important choices very early in the storyline such as determining whether someone lives or dies.

I could go on and on, but it's up to you to find out more.

I guess you are right about Rift. While the graphics do appear to be better (imo) the style of the monsters, the landscapes and music sucks donkey b*lls compared to WoW. I do agree that WoW plays 100s of time more fluid. But as a alternative, Rift probably comes closest to WoW.

Also i think WoW got destroyed by Cataclysm. As a obsessive compulsive restarter i spent most of my 5-6 years of WoW in Elwynn Forest or Durotar. The music was enough for me to sink of into a trance :) Then they destroyed the music, replaced it with some stupid "epic" soundtrack. Then proceeded to rip apart the landscapes as we know them.

Besides Rift i also suggest Lord of the Rings Online. It doesn't really matter if it's good or not it's a free to play game. Graphics are better than warcraft aswell. I just tried it it out and it's pretty fun i guess. Love the fact i didn't pay a cent for it..The only downside is some of micro transactions but i don't think they mess up the balance

I play Guild Wars, Star Trek Online and Lord of The Rings Online, though admittedly none of them that recently... I'll likely check out The Old Republic when it goes F2P (I'm even consisdering taking the Collectors Edition I have (a steal at 50 quid XD) and using it myself, though I can't wait for Guild Wars 2... need a new PC for it though >.<

With regards to The Elder Scrolls, they're bringing out an MMO version of it eventually, I heard.

There's way too much to do in WoW, which some things take ages to do (for example, gearing up for raids/pvp, which takes months). I would play anything that is not a mmorpg, what good use does WoW have?

WoW kinda narrows conversation topics down a bit too
