MMORPG's to kill time with

Apologies, I guess there's a lot of these threads! I've finished uni so got until September to kill time, I'll be on the hunt for a job but in the mean time I have some time to kill so I've thought about dabbling in at some MMORPG's. I used to play Runescape religiously a few years ago but since they changed the combat I'm no longer interested, the Old School doesn't look popular either. I'm not really interested in WoW, it just doesn't really appeal to me. Age of Conan looks interesting, but seems to have bad reviews. I'm just looking for something to kill a little bit of time with tbh, any recommendations would be appreciated!

Forgot to mention, specs don't matter as I have a gaming PC, I can run Battlefield 3 and Skyrim quite nicely etc.

Have you tried DOTA 2? Very addictive MOBA game.

Or if you like text-based MMORPG's try www.aardwolf.com . Much better than graphical MMORPG's because you can read the descriptions of locations and imagine it much better yourself =)

I've not tried DOTA, I'll have a look! Not really keen on text ones, I have no imagination so I'd struggle to imagine it! I'm happy with something that can keep me entertained for a few hours tbh . Cheers

In terms of MOBA games, I honestly prefer League over DOTA2.

Guild Wars 2 is good. I paid $60 or so for the game, the price may have dropped by now. No subscription fee. You can spend real money to purchase 'gems' to buy ingame items, mostly cosmetic things, not at all necessary, Gems can also be bought with currency earned ingame. I've never bothered with them, my daughter does.

Leveling is handled nicely, I think. Say you're a lvl 65, a friend just started and is lvl 3. You go to their starting zone, your level will drop to fit that zone. Any zone that's lower than your level, your level will be adjusted to suit that zone. None of the level 80 in starter zone killing everything with one shot problem.

Five playable races, including felines (females don't have obvious breasts) and plant-people (females do have breasts, evidently they are descended from milkweed). Humans, Norns (super-sized humans), and Asura (Yoda's annoying cousins).

If you decide to try GW2, make an engineer! They have flamethrowers, among other things. Explody things.

Cryptic offers three free-to-play games: Champions Online (superheroes), Neverwinter (D&D v4.0 rules, approximately), and Star Trek Online (which now has storylines for Starfleet, the Klingon Defense Force, and the newly-formed Romulan Republic). And unlike many other such offerings, these really are free to play - you can go all the way to level cap without ever spending a dime. (I know, I did so on one of my STO characters, Vice Admiral Jonathan Sills, currently commanding USS Hans Asperger.)

If you play Champions Online, be aware that for some unknowable reason, they thought people might be overwhelmed with too many choices at the beginning, so about 85% of the costume options for your hero are hidden until you reach 10th level with your first character. It starts looking a lot better then...

The Secret World never quite got the attention it deserved, but is still going pretty strong. Buy once, play forever, although you have to buy all the episodic addons after the fifth one. Not that big a deal, though.

It's sort of like Stephen King meets the Da Vinci Code. Every conspiracy theory and myth turns out to be true. Set in a creepy/funny/awesome take on the real modern world. You should check it out.

MapleStory, if you want something lighthearted, fun and quirky. I recommend a private server since they're more relaxed than the official one (pay items for free, no word filter, etc).

If you try Dota 2, or any of the other games in that genre, just be forewarned, the community is *extremely* toxic. The genre has become legendary for it. In particular, they dont put up with new players well at all (even if they themselves are new.... sigh)

It's something to keep in mind before you jump in.

Lord of the Rings Online. It's "free" to play, but it can be addictive if you really get into it.

I tried Champions Online but it was too slow paced for me, it all seemed to be too slow. I don't mind about toxic communities, I'm not particularly that fussed about them and can tolerate it!

If you like Lord of the Rings at all (or even if you aren't familiar with it but would be interested) it is a great game to check out, really well-done. The main quest lines from about lv30-45 are probably the best written I've seen in a mmorpg to date, you really start to develop a personal connection with some of the characters and actually care about what happens to them. Plus, it has by far the best community of any mmorpg I've ever played, most players are very mature and respectful.

I just started playing Dota2 personally I like league better it seems to be easier. I play gw2 and defiance which operates on the same business model as guild wars.

I second this. I've played quite a few MMOs over the years, including the other ones mentioned in this thread, and although Guild Wars 2 isn't perfect, I'd say that it's probably overall the best MMO made so far. Plus there's no subscription fee, so you don't have to worry about feeling like you're wasting money on a monthly fee if you get too busy to play it very much.

My son was very impressed with Guild wars 2, but he has now reached his maximum level and is playing it less. But he did say it was a great game.
He now plays Skyrim, but that's not online. Just as well, because we are close to our broadband limit for this month!

I used to play Runescape fanatically, for years. I started when it was still a new game, what they later called 'Runescape classic'. I stopped playing it mainly because my female character could not have a Mohican haircut while males could. And I got really annoyed by the people who wanted the whole world, and ALL worlds, to be pk. I never understood why they couldn't accept that some people like it but others don't. It got more and more geared towards spoiled little boys. They'd even follow my character to ask for gifts at one stage.

Funny thing is that I now play a game that may be considered childish. I play Pirate101, and i used to play Wizard101. They are not very challenging games, but fun and sweet, and players seem to be generally well-behaved and friendly. And I don't really have the time to completely indulge myself in a more complicated game, so this game is perfect for me. I play it during breakfast and lunch.
I very much like the Pirate101 combat system. It's based on board games. The Wizard101 combat system is based on card games, also fun.
