Anyone love them as much as I do?
(M.Bison avatar ftw!!)
My favourite ones are probably the
Soul Calibur series. The "rock-paper-scissors" (three basic ways to attack, three basic modes of defence) mechanics are simple and easy to get to grips with, but reward messing about with controls and experimenting with different sequences. I'm fairly good with Rock, Siegfried or Seong Mi-Na.
The
Mortal Kombat series is okay--there's a good storyline, and the character designs, visuals and extras are great. But the game engine seems to favour dial-a-combo fighting, and makes a blocking crouch into a nearly unassailable defence.
Generally, I don't have the super-reflexes needed to pull off a 15-move combo or counter by pressing the right button within 0.2 seconds of the enemy attacking, so I appreciate games where it's not compulsory.
