Fantasy mostly. A puzzle game now and then.

Adventure games. Unfortunately, the genre has grown pretty stale in the past decade or so, and the vast majority of current adventure games are being made by indie developers on very low budgets. Many of them are still amazing games in their own right, but the games themselves are about 20-yrs outdated in terms of graphics and such. It's really a shame too...this genre always provided an amazing sense of exploration and discovery, as well as a highly effective means of story-telling (adventure games are pretty much the only type that has ever made me actually laugh or cry while playing). I always imagined that with the advent of more realistic 3D graphics, the genre would become that much more immersive, but it doesn't seem that many of the big game publishers are willing to take a risk on the genre and would prefer to keep pumping out more generic FPS/sports games.

Sports games. Got into NCAA and Madden at a very early age. Now FIFA and NBA 2k14 are the main sports games I play. I had over 1,000 online matches played in Fifa 13

Anything with endless adventure, stunningly developed characters, and a deep storyline. Oh, and the graphics aren't terrible.

Good examples video games I like:

Skyrim
Half Life series
Portal Series
Team Fortress 2

and when I want to create my own characters/world/personalities

Sims 3

I don't think I could limit myself to one genre. I like action games, rpgs(mostly jrpgs), survival horror(the real survival horror, not mislabeled fps), adventure/puzzle games, platformers, point and clicks, visual novels, classic fps(the old style), some third person shooter games(like the Uncharteds), the occasional sandbox game, sidescrollers, the occasional hack and slash, the occasional sim, and artsy games(like those produced by That Game Company).

I would say you're a lot like me, you're into a little bit of everything. However, to contrast from your list, I'm not that into survival horror, point-and-clicks or jrpgs, and, chances are, I am a bit more into modern first person shooters (I like both Halo and CoD-style gameplay as much as I like Counter Strike's, although I've been getting pretty bored of shooters in general, recently) and multiplayer gaming in general. Additionally, I should mention that I really love Dota 2 and, to a lesser extent, League of Legends, and I can enjoy just about any game that is centered around building custom vehicles, such as Kerbal Space Program, Chromehounds and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolt.

Now as to my favorites settings, those are undoubtedly in the realm of western science fiction, such as military, "near-future" and dystopian sci-fi. I feel neutral about most other game settings, and frankly I can be okay with a setting I really don't like all that much if enjoying the experience the game has to offer and appreciating the premise and art style are mutually exclusive.

I prefer RPGs and simulators.

For RPGs the storyline, character development and gameplay mechanics are absolute key for me. Final Fantasy 11 has been on the top of all those requirements even though its graphics are early PS2 quality.

Simulators I really like them when attention to detail has been the primary focus of the developers. However, I also expect good gameplay. For example I do not like DCS games because even though they have insane detail and simulator quality its just boring to play as every time you take off its the same old same old. World War 2 Online (ground war aspect) on the other hand is not as detailed but the gameplay mechanics and the simulator elements are well blended.

Have you tried War Thunder? Personally I really like this one.
