Surprised someone hadn't posted this one already, like one of the saddest moments in a video game ever.

I knew the PC version of Dune II had good music, but I never really looked into the Genesis version. There's some pretty good stuff there, though it's actually pretty upbeat compared to the music on the PC, which I think would better fit this thread.

It's interesting that they're both primarily FM synthesis-based, yet they sound so different from one another, probably because the Genesis has the PSG on its side as well, whereas the PC is straight OPL2/OPL3.

Quake 1 has a pretty eerie soundtrack too. To be completely honest, I actually like Quake 1's soundtrack much better than the game itself, not that it's necessarily a bad game, but Doom/Doom II were much more fun. ;)

Those Sega Genesis tracks do have some drive, but I still find them to be gloomy. Maybe I'm alone in this perception, I don't know...

But you can definitely hear the gloominess in the PC music, right?

It certainly is "dark". Definitely faster than the console version. I'm not sure if I would call it "sad", but who wants to get into the technicalities of "dark/gloomy" vs "sad"?

This. Pretty much everything except for the battle music and the Golden Saucer theme. I might go back and play it tonight.

A lot of the music from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls is quite sad.

I found the final choir theme music in metal gear solid one to be sad along with several songs from the final fantasy series. I would listen to them frequently in the years i was severely depressed.

Has anyone mentioned the Rundas fight music from Metroid Prime 3?
It's pretty clear the Samus and Rundas are good friends ... and then you have to kill him.
