Anyone ever play Rise Of Flight. In particular the Career mode where I just shot down a SE8 for my first kill and got me an iron cross in an albatross dva. It's basically a WWI war thunder.

Nice! Did you create the Jupiter 2 model? What kind of scenery was that around Sydney?

no i did not create the visual model, but i did create the configuration files that control it's flight dynamics.
the original model was from FS2002, and flew like a 737 plane. it could not fly slower than 120 knots and had to be taken off from a runway which was quite inadequte for me, so i made my own flight files for it and can now drive it more like the one from lost in space.

i have made so many tweaks to everything with the scenery that i forget all the things i did to get it looking like that, but the base scenery is the ORBX global scenery, and i have custom trees and texture colors etc. it is a shame that the cloud draw distance limits the cloud cover on the ground to a small patch when viewed from space.

i like old planes and here is a lufthansa DC-3 landing at bathurst after flying over mount panorama (where they have the car races). it is ORBX scenery and a justflight DC-3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnPRCw-aqGU

here is a DC-6 (pan am (i like the old livery for old planes)) landing in wollongong. it maybe quite boring to most people, but i try to not zoom out more than 1X because i do not like the squashed perspective of zooming out. many outube videos are zoomed out to .4X or something which distorts the sense of actual speed as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjJEDqTaHEg

anyway, if you get ORBX, it improves the whole scenery world.

Aaarrrgghh!

Your videos look too good. I can now see that an insidious spiral of DLC and add-ins of various kinds has begun.

I really enjoyed those fly by and over the wing views from the old Lufthansa DC-3. I was intrigued by that white modern building and the parallel features just before the "Mount Panorama" lettering on the hillside.

A little google map work and I learned about Rydges, the National Motor Racing Museum and the Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit. Wonderful to get that kind of detail from the window of a simulated aircraft.

I recently purchased the Sim720 East Frisian Islands DLC and am really enjoying it for the excellent models around those little airfields.

I read that ORBX is working on projects with Dovetail and Steam and I hope they will release the global scenery that way. I will have to add an "FSX" line to my budgets when possible.

I really like what you did with the Jupiter 2 flight dynamics! :D :D :D

yes there are many ways to improve the FSX experience.

here is a video of all my favourite airplanes i like to fly in fsx in order from smallest to largest. they are all great.

i have not got that scenery yet. i will look into it.

i bought the steam version as well, but it is not easily tweakable and the graphics are more cartoonish in it i think.
i never used it for more than a few hours.

yes but i can only go to 200000 ft and that is that. fsx is limited to that scope.
space orbiter is another program i like but it is very complicated for beginners i am sure.
here is a clip of launching a satellite into orbit that took an extreme amount of calculation to achieve. the ground textures are very bad and the scenery is not coherent much until a high altitude.

Truly an awesome set of aircraft.

But you don't include "Freedom of the Seas?" Should be to the right of the A380, no? :D

Got it but haven't installed it. Have played similar WW1/2 sims, i recall "Battle of Brittain" on the Amiga (or BoB as we called it), it came with mouse steering and by using that and moving the mouse really quickly, you could outturn an F16, which was quite helpful... not that the AI was dangerous anyway. I also discovered that i could fly over the channel and strafe the German airbases along the French coast, bringing their operational capability down to 30%, then going for a kamikaze run to finish it off, which destroyed the airbase.

Do not think the developers thought of that :D

I found some photoreal scenery for one of my favorite airports and now I want to do a few other things to that airport--do any of you FSX people have any suggestions about scenery editors or ways of making your own add-ins?

what is the airport?

i use ade (airport design editor (free)) for simple things such as adding ILS tracks into airports, but to remodel a building in the airport .bgl package requires a program like gmax which is quite an arduous process as far as i have decided.
i can not be bothered modelling a building that i will only see very cursorily in my flight simulator experience

0B8, Elizabeth Field, Fishers Island, NY. I just want to add some static aircraft. The single building that is generated is not terribly off the real thing.

maybe go to the menu item "scenery" and select the "traffic" tab and run the slider for general aviation traffic up to 100% and see what happens.

No change. Elizabeth Field is too much of a backwater and FSX generates traffic over a wide surrounding area. Since that area includes major airports at Boston, Providence, Hartford, New York and Newark, and the many small airports of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Long Island the AI doesn't think to put anything on tiny 0B8. \

I dowloaded scenery for nearby KGON from flightsim.com and that is great. It's particularly good to see the Blackhawks of the National Guard lined up in their area, along with busy ramps, hangars, vehicles and a better version of the main terminal.

What I want to do for Elizbeth field is put 5-6 GA aircraft in the parking area and a car or two near the terminal. I would love to have an AI Skyhawk and Cherokee doing touch and goes there... I'll have a go with ADE, thanks for the suggestion.

I have learned that ADE and some other tools require components of the FSX SDK that were part of the boxed Gold Edition, but have not been distributed by Dovetail with FSX on Steam. There is some sort of corporate level licensing issue that is preventing that.

A workaround can be achieved by using the SDK from the boxed FSX Gold or P3D. While one of these is now harder to purchase, the other is available as a free download, though I think the terms of the EULA might be construed as requiring P3D and the terms of that don't seem to apply to hobbyists/recreational sim pilots.

Messy business. I seem to have the parts I need now and will experiment with adding GA parking to 0B8 through ADE

i am not sure how ADE works with steam because i have not bothered to use my steam version of fsx. i bought it to see if it was an improvement but i was instantly disappointed with the cartoon like rendering of the scenery (in my opinion), so i desisted with it.

the best easy workaround that i can think of to add AI aircraft to your airport at elizabeth field (or anywhere) would be to use a facility called "fsrecorder". i think it also works with the steam version.

what it does is it records you flying your plane, and when you play back the file, you have the freedom of looking all over the place without the necessity of being in the cockpit and controlling it. you can be a passenger on your flight or a camera on the roof.

you can also play back flights you have recorded as AI traffic, and in that mode, you can fly your own plane and see the other plane you flew previously and follow it if you choose.

so what you would do with this application to add AI to elizabeth would be to load an aircraft and situate it where you want it to be on the airfield, then then start a recording that is nothing but your aircraft sitting there doing nothing. set the fsx simrate to 128x and you can record an hour long file of this very quickly.
then you save the file as whatever AI and you can then load another airplane to fly in fsx and place it somewhere close by, and record that in the same manner etc...et al, and then you can multiselect all those files and have them playback as simultaneous AI traffic. in that way you can have as many aircraft as you can be bothered recording represented at your airport, except there is the bother of selecting them all and and playing them whenever you load the airport as it is not embedded. you can also record dynamic activity and have it play back as ai obviously.
here is a shot of a few aircraft placed at 0b8 that way.

Brilliant! Thank you, b9.
Great image.

I think a few of those aircraft are going to need JATO or disassembly and shipping to get back out. 12/30 is only 2328 feet long. 7/25 is shorter. The largest aircraft I have seen operate from 0B8 was a Twin Otter. I had the privilege of lying on the beach off the end of runway 30 when that thing took off from 12 and passed a few feet overhead. Thrilling experience.

That parking area would typically have a Cherokee or Skyhawk, maybe a cub or V-tail Bonanza on the ramp. In high summer on a weekend, all 7 spots might be filled with something like a Baron or Cessna 310 in the mix.

I spent a lot of time around that airport when I was a kid and have many happy memories of it.
