I am a huge gamer. I play a lot every day. There are a lot of different types of games. Action, strategy, RPG, puzzle, simulators, sports etc.

What is your favourite game type?

Mine is strategy games. They keep my mind totally focused on something other then my reality, which often sucks.

Right now I am playing a game called, BattleRex: Genghis Khan, on my iPad. I like it.

I used to play a lot of action games when I was younger, but I have stopped doing that. It stresses me out to much.

Hm, I play alot of shmups myself, usually the bullet-hell type, which tend to look something like this:

Image

That image, apparently, being from one of my own videos of it. Doing a Google search for an image of the game, it took me some time to realize this.

But yes, they tend to look like that. They are harder than they appear, which is saying something.

I also do fighting games, and I am very good at them.

Those are the two main genres I do best at, as they suit what talents and such I have. I'm very, very fast and can process a huge number of things at once; the downside being that I'm almost completely incapable of focusing on a FEW things at once. I am very spacey alot of the time as a result; not very helpful in daily life, as you might imagine. Which of course then leaves me being not so good at all at some other types of games. I'm also extremely aggressive and have a bit of a berserker style, particularly in fighting games, but I'll end up doing it in pretty much anything if I get irritated enough. This, it turns out, does not help in games like, say, an FPS. Apparently, yelling "CHAAAAARGE!! !!" and launching straight at the nearest.... anything.... isnt exactly the best tactic. Who knew?

I like strategy games alot, but am not nearly as good at those as I'd like to be. But I sure do enjoy them. Mostly turn-based.... there are very few RTS types these days.

I also really like Minecraft a ton, and games that are like it. Minecraft is one of my absolute favorites. As I prefer a high difficulty in games though, I often mod it specifically to dramatically increase the difficulty.

And finally, retro games, or "arcade" games, or whatever. Gots almost every arcade game ever made, up to a certain year (past which, we hit the point of there just not being many made anymore... sigh...), on this machine, and I play them frequently. Absolutely love them. Of course, if I can find REAL arcade units to play, even better. And I have all sorts of ancient game consoles and things all over the place. There's an old Atari 7800 unit that.... er.... appears to currently be on it's side under the desk, musta gotten knocked down there, ugh, gotta deal with that... but normally it sits next to the keyboard here. I get alot of use out of it.

Also, IN THEORY, I like horror games. In practice, I hate most of them. To most designers, "horror" equals lots of blood, gore, and a hero with a shotgun. Or a variety of variations of this. There arent many horror games I find that I actually LIKE; recently, there's just been the Five Nights at Freddy's games, and also Spooky's House of Jumpscares (which does NOT look like a horror game at first glance, but I'm loving it), for that sort. There's a couple of others that look good such as Dungeon Nightmares that I've seen on Youtube, but I havent tried that one yet. Typically I only get good horror games (well, and good games of many types) from indie devs. Most games I play are from indie devs.

.....okay I'll stop rambling now.

There are a lot more genres than you have listed.

With that said, I'll play anything I find fun.

Eh, my own favorites werent on there. I could vote arcade I guess, but it's not actually my true favorite, so...

And I dont just pick "action" as I tend to think of games like God of War or Arkham Whatever when thinking of that label, and those games bore me, so not going to pick that either.

Ok. I should have made a longer list.

I love city simulators such as Cities: Skylines, or games such as Sid Meyer's CivRev. I also really liked Evony, and of course, Call of Duty, Skyrim, and right now, The Witcher 3

I don't know what to pick from the poll options.

Pokemon is by far my fave game, and is considered RPG, but I'm not into most RPGs.
I like sims like Animal Crossing and Rune Factory/Harvest Moon, but not too many other sims.
I like platforms and racing, but they aren't on the list.
Arcade games are fun but quickly gets taxing because I have to focus hard while playing them. Same goes for shoot 'em ups (not including FPS, which I don't like at all, I only like shooters like Duck Hunt and their like).
Word puzzles are okay, as are some beat 'em ups.

I like RPGs, strategy, and (depending on the community) MMOs. I'm somewhat picky about story in RPGs, though. A lot of them are generic fantasy and very lengthy. I was into Starcraft when I was younger, and Battle for Wesnoth before the flaws in multiplayer drove me away. FFXIV has some opportunity for strategy and a player base that's friendly enough to make socializing actually enjoyable.

I tend to like oldschool arcadey stuff myself, as well as Tetris-like puzzle games and fast-paced "twitch" shooters like Doom or Unreal Tournament, but I do play stuff in other genres too.

I'm not much of a gamer but I do, on occasion, play my niece's Nintendo DS & PS4.

"Rayman Legends" and "Professor Layton & the Spectre's Call" are two games in particular that I am currently enjoying. But after playing I usually feel somewhat guilty because I want my niece to be living in an intellectually stimulating environment. Whilst I believe video games - in moderation - are an acceptable form of entertainment for a 10 year old girl, I would much prefer to see her with a book in hand than a controller.

I like all game types for the most part but I mostly like RPGs, adventure games and action games the best.

I'll playing some sports and racing games, mind you they are Mario ones as I have no interest in real sports.

Well RPG games fun.

I picked RPGs, since I do play a lot of them and most of my top 10 all time favorite games are RPGs...but I'm also quite partial to open world games I can explore, music/rhythm games ( Rock Band, Rhythm Heaven and EBA FTW! ) and platformers

There's no reason to feel guilty about it, games can be quite intellectually stimulating; frankly, I wouldnt be much into them if they werent. I know things like Call of Duty put out the impression that it's all mindless violence, but that's far from the truth. The unfortunate bit is simply that those are the games that sell the most, and are thus advertised the most...

Just as a very brief example.... http://imgur.com/a/lhOeb

The first screenshot there is of an RTS game actually (real-time-strategy) that is focused entirely on single-player VS an abnormally advanced AI. I'm familiar with the developer of this; I do alot of testing for them and even had a chance to do some contracted work for them. Their games are COMPLICATED. That one there is one of the most complex that I'm aware of... I couldnt even begin to describe just how everything works. Every single number, every single stat, ALL of it is important, and all of it needs to be considered. The game's difficulty is high, and what you see on the screen is just ONE map; it's all procedurally generated, but it's ALOT of maps (formed into a galaxy with varying connections), up to 100 in one game.... that all run at exactly the same time. Frankly, calling it "complicated" doesnt even do it justice. But it's a favorite of mine.

The second one is of a roguelike, and probably the game that I did by far the most testing for; some of the things found in it were actually my idea, including the hardest of the difficulty settings, simply titled "Misery" for obvious reasons. Same developer. Not as complicated as the other game, but.... as you can see, there's still lots of numbers and stats and things.... and that's just one of the equipment screens. Again, it'd take far too long to explain how the game works, or show all of the examples of complexity, but....

Suffice it to say, these require ALOT of thinking and decision making and all of that. Things like this, they make you really have to actually use your brain for something.... unlike some of the "major" games out there that can be a bit too mindless. And these are just two of MY examples. There's TONS of games out there that are like this, as LOTS of gamers arent satisfied with simplicity and mindless gameplay. Even many action games can have these sorts of things... I'm not even going to try to fully explain the effort that alot of people put even just in learning fighting games... all the frame counts and data values and math and everything that they calculate through to come up with strong techniques for use during competition, it can get a little silly, really.

It really always bugs the hell outta me that gaming gets such a bad rap, a reputation for being "mindless" when it absolutely, really doesnt have to be.... and very often isnt. As opposed to some other activities people frequently engage in, like, say.... watching TV, or movies. Ugh. At least gaming requires interaction and engagement, even with the super simple CoD type games. But really, lots of games can be very cerebral, and can help with some aspects; they're a huge part of the reason why my own reaction speed is so absurdly fast, for instance.... very useful for driving. Coordination, as well, for that matter. Among other things. Got me into computers as well, for that matter.

I tell ya though, I freaking hate alot of the more mindless AAA games that tend to push forth the misconceptions that the industry is surrounded by. It just.... ugh. It BOTHERS me. And I know I aint the only one.

....but that's enough out of me, just some thoughts and opinions on the matter.

....though I do agree on the books, to a point. I read *alot* of books, blasted things are all over my room, and I always think more people should try that instead of TV (particularly with things like reality shows replacing, you know, shows that actually have good writing and character development... ugh, I miss the old days, really...), or just at least read SOMETHING every now and then. Lots of good stories out there to be found.
