I have been researching the game Munchkin and trying to decide whether to get into it. I was wondering if anyone has played it and what are your thoughts on the game.

I've played it a couple of times. It's very funny. If you like puns and weird monsters, you'll enjoy yourself. There's also a very strong theme where you and the other players try to help or harm each other. It's quite diplomatic and this can add a completely different dimension to the game.

My advice with Munchkin? Pick an expansion, and buy that instead. Most expansions are the same size as the base set, but they have different themes and some cool twists not available in the base set. The only reason I would suggest getting the base set for any reason is if you like the elements of Dungeons and Dragons more than all the other available themes.

Munchkin Bites is based on White Wolf's World of Darkness. Munchkin Cthulhu is based on H.P. Lovecraft's stories. Munchkin Booty is pirate-themed, Star Munchkin is space-themed, and Super Munchkin is superhero-themed. There's also a Western-themed one (I think it's called The Good, The Bad, and the Munchkin) and a spy-themed one, Munchkin Impossible.

I've played most of them, and I think you might have the most replay value with the pirate or spy munchkin sets. And I should warn you that my NT friends got bored of the game pretty quickly.

Make sure if you don't have a newer set, at least, to double check the rules online before you play. The rules have been revised since the first few printings in order to make the game balanced. (The quickplay rules used to be the only way you start with four cards of each deck. Now it's in the standard rules.)

If you play once or twice and decide that you really like it, I would recommend you invest in some ten-sided dice to track levels. :D

Actually, "Munchkin Bites", "Super Munchkin", "Munchkin Fu", "Star Munchkin", "Munchkin Booty", "The Good, the Bad, and the Munchkin", "Munchkin Cthulhu", "Munchkin Impossible", and the new "Munchkin Axe Cop" aren't expansions - they're standalone games, built along the same lines as the original "Munchkin", but with their own genre assumptions (the original uses D&D-style hack'n'slash genre, "Bites" is vampire-style, GB&M is Westerns, and so forth). Most of them have at least one expansion of their own, with additional cards.

Even worse, it's possible to mix-and-match the sets (there are included rules for doing so), so it's possible to eventually wind up with a Dark Half-Orc Half-Pirate Master Wizard with a Flaming Gleaming Narrow S-Cape of Doom!. :)

The original set has multiple expansions - they're getting set to release the eighth expansion, introducing centaurs, called "Half Horse, Will Travel" (yes, in order to enjoy this game, it is necessary to enjoy puns and absurdist humor) - but each expansion requires the core game to play, and cannot be played alone. This may seem a bit nitpicky, but if you go into a gaming store and ask for a Munchkin expansion, they'll quite happily send you home with, say, "Munchkin 4: De-Ranged", which you won't be able to play because you don't have the core Munchkin set. Oh, sure, you can giggle at some of the monsters and enhancement cards, but that's only fun for so long...

I am really thinking of buying the regular munchkin game. I am an old D&D player who really doesn't play any more. I am also tempted to try Super Munchkin. I am just hoping I get a chance to play it enough. I just hate buying games and not playing very much.

I enjoyed it the first and only time I played it. Very funny cards!

It's good fun but it's probably not the sort of game that people get obsessive over. It's definitely a roleplay themed card game rather than a roleplay game (although having said that, some of the D&D games I've been involved in ended up being more about the stats than the roleplay).

I think I will go to my local game store tomorrow and pick up a copy. The only thing I am concerned about is finding people to play with. My wife wants to play so hopefully some of her friends have a sense of humor.

Munchkin is pretty cool, but sometimes it drags on for too long and gets a bit out-of-hand...

Good choice. Fun game. I would advise getting the original Munchkin game, forgo the expansion packs for the original game and get some of the other themed Munchkin games if you like it. And don't forget about Killer Rabbits, another good card game.
