Like one that won't take up too much memory (my computer only stores 4GB) and isn't just a free trial, but something you can play for free for a long time.

Do you explicitly mean MMORPG, or any game with a persistent world, or many players in the same game at once? I hope I do not seem to have missed the point, but I know that MMO is often used to describe any number of online games.

Champions Online, and its sister game Star Trek Online. CO, at least, allows you to play through the entire game without ever giving the publisher, Cryptic Studios, a single dime if you don't want to. You get two character slots for free, can choose from nine Archetypes (premade character progression templates, which can be individuated at certain levels), and have access to a pretty fair selection of costume parts for your superhero.

(In case you're interested, here's a quick look at the characters on one secondary account. There are three because I got one free slot for playing during last November's anniversary event.)

I don't know for sure yet if STO lets you play all the way to the rank of Admiral for free, but I don't see why not, given how successful the method has been for CO. You start with a Miranda-class light cruiser, pick up two bridge officers during the tutorial missions, and get to do some cosmetic modifications for free as you start. (The USS Belleau Wood, commanded by Lt. Jon Sills, looks nothing like the USS Crazy Horse, commanded by Lt. Draken Darthmal [my roommate], for instance.) Like CO, you get two character slots for free. You also get new ships when you get later promotions - Draken apparently made LCDR today, and was rewarded with an escort cruiser, the next step up.

You could try text games like Lusternia, Aetolia, Achaea, Imperian, or Midkemia Online.

They're free, they're MMORPGs, and the clients used for them are very small (under 20 megs easy). Sure, they lack picture, but text games can be very fun. I've played them a lot more than I've played any other MMORPG (World of Warcraft, Ultima Online, et cetera). There are many other text games out there, but the ones listed above happen to be from my favorite company in the text business!

The games listed above actually let you log in through their website using their web client, but if you try them out and decide to take them seriously I suggest you take a look at the Mudlet client.

I play City of Villains online for free. I'm not sure of the memory requirement though.

I think the f2p in Runescape sucks but it is free and doesn't require a download.

The Guild Wars franchise aren't a free buy upfront but they're limitless free play online at least. They're indicating GW2 will work out the same way.

There all crap for the most part.

Although I did enjoy The World of Tanks and Planetscape back in the day.

Since the release of WoW there hasn't been any better MMO sadly. I've tried most of the new MMOs, but they all seem to have major flaws that makes me quit.

Age of Conan: Got to max level fairly quickly because I enjoyed the leveling experience, then did some rading with the other only few level 80s. Wasn't much content and most of it was buggy as crap. Did all the raids in 2 days and all we had left to do was gank other guilds in the desert. Too little content = fail.

Warhammer Online: Horrible, just horrible all together.

SWTOR: Too linear, crappy non-responsive PvP, not big Star Wars fan enough.

And others that are not worth mentioning.

Guild Wars 2 is looking promising though, but so did a lot of other games.

I used to know the best MMORPG, until they went down a horrible F2P/Pay to win route like pretty much every F2P MMORPG out nowadays. Ever since that awful model was introduced, the more and more games go down the same road... There just aren't any good games that are F2P anymore IMO. They all use some soul sucking f2p p2w or pay monthly to get full access and not be heavily limited in the game scheme.

Anywho... I have not tried this game I'm going to mention, but it has a lot of good reviews from a reputable reviewing/first look YT channel... It's called Allods. I don't know if it's any good, but they say it is... So maybe it's for you. As far as I know the majority of the game is questing/instances, that's how you level, but there are open world elements besides the main towns. It's heavily populated as well. Like many other games are claimed to be, it's similar to WoW. It's a "WoW" Clone, but the best one apparently.

I would just wait for Guild Wars 2 if you want a genuine and unique MMORPG experience though. It will probably be around 50 dollars to buy but after that it's free and you get regular updates, crisp game play, a large community, and no BS marketing schemes.

Give DDO a try. Runescape is also another option.
