Any flight sim people here.

I recently got FSX Steam Edition and I can see it becoming a very consuming thing.

These days I get my flight sim fix with War Thunder (though I mostly play it in arcade mode which is only quassi-realistic at best) but have been playing various incarnations of flight sims for quite a long time, starting with Flight Simulator II on the Apple II way, way back when. Before War Thunder the sim I probably played most was various versions of Falcon, 4.0 especially. I did not even realise that the whole Microsoft Flight Simulator series was still around, never mind on Steam, so will be checking it out for sure.

:D SubLogic! 8)

I learned to navigate by VOR using that thing!
Happy memories.

Then F-16 Falcon (the OLD Mac version)

And F/A-18 Gold/Korea.

Then a long simless period and now back and though FSX is long in the tooth, I am enjoying it immensely. I have to be careful not to let it suck me in too deeply, though!.

Yeah, I loved flight Simulator ][ - I sucked at it, but that WW1 mode was a blast. When they released JET! for the IBM, I was crushed since I only had Apple - then like a year later I saw a magazine add for Jet for Apple and I just about died of excitement. I especially loved that I could use the FS2 disk with Jet to fly the F-16 and F-18 on the WW1 map - of course no enemy biplanes, but I could pretend. Looking back though I realize how terrible FS2 was - the frame rate was so low that basically all I was doing was compensating for always overshooting my control inputs because the screen took so long to update - I could never level out, could never line up with a runway - I thought I was absolutely a terrible pilot but really it was more just the thing being so unsmooth.

I used to play lots of flight simulators. Typically if i reinstall FSX i'd fly a 737 from A to B. Outside of fighter jets, that is the best airplane i know of. I think i finished all the achievements in FSX some where quite easy to finish.

First simulator i flew also was the Sublogic flight sim, F-18 interceptor was another time eater as well as Falcon, Strike Force Harrier and other games on the C64, Amiga and PC.

i still use fsx very often. even though it is old, it is still quite pleasantly crisp and detailed graphically.
the realism of planes can be very good too, especially with a few of the payware ones. here is a video i recorded of the 707 and 727 flying from melbourne to perth. i flew both of the planes. there is an add on (free) called fsrecorder, and it records your flights so that you can load them up again as traffic and fly your current flight with them. it can record infinite flights, so theoretically, you could do a flight with each of your planes (starting from different parking spots obviously) and play them all back as traffic in your current flight.

the smoothness of this video when i play it is not good on my internet connection (i do not know if it appears jerky for other people), but the actual in game experience is as smooth as silk.

I love Flight Sim!

I'm still on FS2004 and would love to get FSX one day. Even though FS2004 is obviously now 11 years old, I find the graphics and realism on it fantastic, so I can't imagine how great FSX must be. Thanks for mentioning about it being on Steam, didn't realise this!

I usually fly the big passenger jets on both short haul and long haul. When I was younger I flew from every US state capital to every other US state capital and made timetables etc. I sometimes have a real-time long-haul flight going (like transatlantic) and get on with other things (in real life) at the same time in the less interesting bits like flying over the ocean for hours. I've recently got a new computer and for the first time I'm able to have 100% traffic, which is amazing and adds so much more realism and challenge - like trying to get a landing spot into Heathrow!

I'm on my tablet right now but look forward to seeing that video when I go on the PC :)

Those Pan Am liveries make me very nostalgic. I used to love going from New York to London on those 1970s 747 Clippers. That 707 model is also very nostalgic--my first ever transatlantic flight was in a TWA 707 from JFK, from that Amazing Eero Saarinen terminal. I was about six years old and the crew took me up for tour of the flight deck, something I will never forget.

It's good to see some other flight sim people here.

I've played FSX a lot especially the helicopter missions! My other big fav in flight simulators is Hellcats that I used to play very intensely 15 or 20 years ago. I've recently discovered Ship Simulator (2006 and 2008) and they are my most played games last several months.

my favorite plane is the 707. it is reasonably unwieldy but if you know how to fly it, it outperforms all the others.

i have also been invited into the cockpit of some planes when i was a child.

It's a beautiful design. That vertical stabilizer has a great look. Your comment reminds me of the famous Tex Johnston Barrel Roll:

Got the Aerosoft Manhattan X DLC...

Awesome and fun.

If you know New York, this is really great. So many landmark buildings are there, and with the sounds of sirens and trafficm, it's a completely immersive experience.

I like the way Steam handles the installation.

I had fun taking a jetranger and c172 over familiar areas of the city.

:D

I had two copies of x-plane 10, but my sister got ahold of both of them. I never saw them again.
Ah well, at least I still have the older x-Plane on Mac OS 9, as well as the IOS version of XP 10.

That is one good thing about Steam. As long as you have your log in details, no one can steal it from you.

How is the iOS version?

X-Plane 10 is pretty amazing. I've only seen the demo, but I found out that you can fly to a an airport way out on the south western edge of the map in the demo and it's the best one. A packed ramp, great taxiways and general scenery. I wish the price for the main app was a little lower. I can't justify $65 at the moment. I am sure I will eventually have both, but I wish they would have a sale on X-Plane.

Yesterday in FSX I flew a Lear 45 from KEWR to KTMB, mostly at FL365 ending with ATC vectors to the the ILS 9R approach. The ATC sim worked very well for that flight.
Really enjoyng it.

In case you are looking for this, the one I had in mind was KAST.
