Well, I'm thinking of getting a Wii this october (because i get a check for $3200 or more from the state), but I'm worried that after I buy it they'll just replace it with something new within a few months (probably around christmas season), making it obsolete. Is this worry well founded? Or should the Wii last me a decent amount of time?

The game console industry operates on roughly a five year development schedule so the Wii won't be replaces for three years. Also you'd start hearing about new systems years before they're released.

If you enjoy Nintendo games such as Zelda, Smash Bros. or Super Mario, Wii is your best choice.

If you like online gaming, FPS such as Gears of War, or mature games, don't buy it or just think it twice.

I'm owner of a Wii, and I'm very happy with it. Whether to buy a Wii or no depends of your game preferences.

Rest assured, no new game system will be coming out anytime soon. The news would have gotten out long ago, and they would've mentioned it at E3. It's definitelly worth the money. ;D

I don't think you need to worry too much about it becoming obsolete for a while. Plus, with Nintendo's reputation for making its new consoles backwards-compatible, you should be able to play any Wii games you buy now on the next machine. Actually, I bought mine more for the classic NES games on the Virtual Console, and that'll probably be around for a very long time.

no more heroes is awesome. of course the nintendo games are all homeruns (ie, zelda, mario, mario paper, smash bros). madworld looks very promising.

i can't wait to see what they do with the improved controller.

No reason to worry about that at all. At the very soonest, I would expect a replacement in about three years.

Besides, it's backwards compatible with GameCube games, so you can't really lose ;)

I doubt the Wii will be superceded anytime soon by a new Nintendo console, given it's excellent sales. Whether you would enjoy anything that comes out on the Wii is another matter entirely...

If you do go out and get a Wii, you might want to wait for a bit. Nintendo will soon be packaging the Wii with a new peripheral called the WiiMotion Plus and some additional software.

The wii is the best console out their if your main focus is to play games and have fun. Also Nintendo will be upgrading all controllers with a new component taking motion control to an entirely new level leaving another company to eat their dust ^_^. Sorry guys had to put that last part in no offense to PS3 fans just an insult for Sony.

i've generally found this is how it works.

if you're not much of a graphics whore and just like creative gameplay you can enjoy with friends, the Wii is for you.

if you ARE a graphics whore and like online shooters you can play with friends, the 360 is for you.

if you're a graphics whore and enjoy high end platforming games you mostly play by yourself, the PS3 is for you.

For the money the Wii is a good buy but I've started playing the XBox 360 more. The best way to decide is see what games you'll play on it, it if it has games you like, then you should get it.

There's some information (unofficial but from a reliable source) that the next Nintendo system will be out in 2011. It was called WiiHD by the blogger and so far it's just known to have graphics more competitive with the other systems.

Video game consoles aren't like computers or cars, you can keep them for a while. Do you have a Gamecube? If not, the Wii is definitely worth it since it's backwards compatible. Also, if you hook it up to the internet, you can download old Nintendo, SNES, and etc. games using Virtual Console.

By the way, some time in early 2009, the Nintendo DSi will be avalible in the US, and EU. I looked at Nintendo of Japan (DSi) and it really seems to be looking to be compatible with the Wii. In more ways than 4.
