The Fallout New Vegas topic (might be spoilers)
It's a bit odd isn't it, I was using the marksman carbine because that's all I had, and I didn't know any better
I'm currently doing an unarmed hardcore run and I'm finding that spiked knuckles can decapitate powder gangers with one punch, it's quite hilarious really. All this time I've been using guns but some spiked metal means everyone dies quickly! It's a bit silly but I'm enjoying it.
This run through I'm hoping to find Veronica and then go on a mad spree of punching people with power fists. I never found trading post 188 though so I don't know which way it is! I just wish you could attach guns to power fists (And yes, the Ballistic fist does exist but damnit! I want one which discharges green plasma death!)
Going back to the reputation system, I quite like it but can see how it's not greatly made, it's certainly better than Fallout 3 when you can nuke an entire town but suddenly your seen as a exemplar of goodliness when you give random people purified water.
About the Legion, you can see it in a few ways, considering the Roman empire (Which they are based on) It could be a case of their "Home territory" not being that bad at all, but when it comes to the borders, you see the worst excesses of the legion. Cass mentions that Caravans that trade with the Legion NEVER get raided or picked on because of it, so they do protect those traders who assist them regulary. Their views on women however, makes me want to launch a mini-nuke into Caesars face.
Yeah the unarmed thing is kinda weird. I was fooling around with it because I found a unmarked underwater cave in lake Mead that had a NCR trooper in it surrounded by lakelurks. After I killed the lakelurks he gave me the schematic for the dog tag fist as a reward I guess. He also mentioned I should bring the tags I find to the NCR... which is kinda Ironic because the dog tag fist requires 20 NCR dog tags to craft But yeah anyway I figured I'd try out Unarmed because I had that and the ranger take down perk i learned from the ranger in Novac and unarmed is a very good skill. For some reason it's very powerful and tends to do more damage than the weapons say. I might start putting points into unarmed just because it makes sense to have a form of fighting that doesn't require ammo and I like the complexity of fighting unarmed compared to shooting so it's fun to mess around with when I can. Seriously though I took out the securitrons on the New Vegas Strip with a level 19 Unarmed skill and the Dog Tag Fist so I think it's a pretty good skill
I liked the reputation system too... as far as having reputation. I just got a little miffed that I could get bad rep when nobody is left to tell their faction what I did to them.
As far as the Legion goes... there's more than just the disrespect of women thing that pisses me off. It's also their sheer ignorance... or maybe cockiness. My character is female so they already talk down to her, but on top of that they talk down as if they are by far superior in ability and intellect. The word may be arrogance. Personally they are nowhere near earning the name of Legion or whatever they are trying to go for. They are actually inferior enemies so it's like a midget calling someone who's 6 feet tall short. Here's my moment where I lost it and painted the walls red with them. I was walking to Hoover Dam. On my way north I ran into some loser legion wearing the standard Legion r-tard outfit. He confronts me through script so I didn't confront him. He talks to me like I'm a dog (Since I'm female in the game) and tells me I will be taken to his superior for judgment for entering their territory. Now I could have instantly tore him limb from limb had I refused since I was traveling with my... ahem... Mini-gun which was equipped... but I decided to try and be diplomatic since I wasn't trying to make enemies with the Legion. I then am transported in front of his superior "Dead Sea". By him I am treated with even more disrespect and arrogance until I lost it and tore his puny ass to shreds along with his eager to die comrades. Why their arrogance bugs me even more is that they are so inferior as fighters and they talk and stand much to tall and boldly. Three r-tard legion wearing which might as well be underwear for armor... being disrespectful and telling me I'm weak and inferior... While I'm wielding a gatling gun and wearing Heavy armor just a notch below power armor... erm... that sounds pretty friggin dumb of them. I don't know why but they just seem like the type of people who need to be purged. My character has an Intelligence of 10 and a strength of 9 and carries heavy weapons even their precious Caesar couldn't hold up without shaking uncontrollably... they should be wetting their pants in my presence... not waving around their tiny weapons and comparing me as inferior to their weak intelligence and strength
As far as where Veronica is located I took a picture of my map and pointed where trading post 188 is. I hope the picture isn't too shoddy to make out. Stupid cell phones I think when I found her in my old game she was on the bridge overpass part and not below it
I found Veronica and now I have my own power fist, together her and my character are an unending force of mechanically enhanced punching! Overall I'm finding the game hilariously good fun, it certainly brings back the days of Fallout 1 and 2 more than ever.
I also find Veronica is a very well written character.
I challenged Benny to a duel in the Legion's arena.
I like how the Desert Rangers' kit is the same as Tycho's from Fallout 1 (he's a Desert Ranger. If you examine him it explains how he's dressed).
I'm kinda torn over which faction I prefer (other than going your own way).
Veronica died in my current game. So did Dog. Cassidy, Arcade and the Nightkin are all alive though, and I haven't picked up the ghoul (I'll go back and get him).
Ah ha! I found my absolute favorite Fallout weapon: The Alien Blaster.
Spoiler:
It's the same as the one in Fallout 3, i.e., looks, function and whatnot. You get it from a few aliens who're camping. I prefer the look of the one in Fallout 1/2, and also how that one can burn the skin off people (in addition to turning to dust IIRC). It's a shame they left out the "burning the skin off" animation.

THIS MACHINE kills Deathclaws!
...Cass with a Riot Gun helps a bit too.
I've seen a lot of new, lower level players complain that Deathclaws are too deadly, and experienced, high level players talk about how easy it is to sneak and snipe them...
I just wanted to let everyone know, you can kill them the cowboy way too!
I'm lvl 20 with a sneak skill of 19. Most of my weapons have levers. None of my weapons have scopes. AND, I only shoot hand loaded ammo.
I'm shooting hand loaded .308s , of course, and Cass is shooting 12 ga buckshot mags. I had to relax my no VATS rule (the first three shots are VATS), and we can't take more than two at a time, BUT man is it a HOOT.
I just bought a Brush Gun, which I think will eventually do even better (it's DPS is over 200 with the cowboy perk) but gov't hollow points just bounce off Deathclaws! Hand loaded ammo is the key, poeple...
So, who else kills Deathclaws WITHOUT sniping them?

I've killed A legendary Deathclaw, a mother deathclaw, 2 normals, and 3 young in a cave while back pedaling towards the exit with them all in hot pursuit... by flooding them with a hose spray of armor piercing round lead from the CZ57 Avenger
Erm... no V.A.T.S. either I guess?
The hardest part was the reloading of my magazine in between the carnage... and I almost died but uh... it was an awesome scene
Personally I find most enemies to be pretty easy with the CZ57 and the appropriate ammo. It's the unique mini-gun. You do need power armor or something with a high DT to use it though as you have to soak up a bit of damage as you move slowly when it's equipped and of course revving up the motor is about a few hits in damage all in itself. I mainly switch between it and my sniper rifle since my main setup is between those two guns.
I've pretty much lost all interest in the rest of the guns since I found the perfect balance in equipment to my style of play My equipment overall doesn't weigh more than a total of 85lbs either (Includes the weight of my power armor)... so I like the setup
Edit: For reference... the CZ57 Avenger = 425 DPS at a level 100 guns and 10 strength
Deathclaw aren't all that hardy... they actually ironically have a high DT for being naked monster things
That's why hollow point bounces off of them like bullets hitting superman. The only reason a stealth sniper headshot does enough damage to down them is the massive damage the combined circumstances of the critical can do... as it overpowers their DT. That's why the second shot after a failed kill with a sniper rifle... is mind bogglingly weak since its damage isn't piercing through the death claws armor.
Armor Piercing rounds in a beast that pulls off a high DPS will make short work of deathclaws. Like my Avenger, it's DPS seems to be the highest I've seen in the game... not to mention it acts as crowd control and stuns enemies through quickly crippling their limbs. When you cripple an enemy they flinch, freak out, and slow down... not to mention taking out their lower halves first really makes a deathclaw assault kinda fun to watch... and laugh a little
Edit: @GoonSquad... try armor piercing rounds in your new brush gun if you can (I don't know what that gun is or if AP is available). 200 DPS with AP rounds should do a number on the claws and you might not even need to use V.A.T.S. at all. My encounter with the DClaws in the Dead Wind Caverns was just me solo... no companions. So with you and Cass packing AP rounds... your combined force should overpower them
Edit: I guess you insinuated that the brush gun is strictly hollow point govt. rounds. You could try another gun you find to be strong and equip it with AP rounds if this is the case. Also I don't know what hand loading is so I don't know if using AP rounds is against your personal rules. BTW I'd like to know... what is Hand Loading? I've seen ammo crafting at the ammo loading bench things but don't understand what makes it special since it seems to just be ammo I can buy else ware instead of having to make it

The Brush Gun doesn't have AP, only Semi-wad cutters, but they do have -6 DT... I guess it's kind of a cross between AP and HP.
I'm going to try them as soon as I get some free 45-70 gov't casings... I'll let Cass have the .308 with AP or hand loads. I think we'll do okay.
PS
425 DPS is BRUTAL!! ! Miniguns might not be cowboy guns (strictly speaking), but I think I'm gonna haft try that!
PPS
You do hand loading at the ammo bench. You can break down unneeded ammo to make more useful ammo...
The special 'hand loads' tend to be a cross between AP and HP ammo, but not quite as good as either.
The best loads for hand loading are the semi-wad cutter loads for the .44 mag and the 45-70 gov't. Those calibers don't have regular AP variants... The SWC loads tend to do more damage and bypass a certain amount of DT too.
Hand loading SWC ammo is a must for anybody with the cowboy perk because you get a 25% damage bonus with the Trail Carbine (.44 mag) and the Brush Gun (45-70 gov't. )

Here's the location of my best friend in New Vegas (CZ57 Avenger)

Just in case you didn't know where to find it. It's not particularly hard to acquire and just requires wading into some radiation... the catch is needing 100 in guns and at least a 9 if not a 10 in strength to not shake uncontrollably while trying to wield it. It's superior to the mini-gun in DPS and weighs 18lbs instead of 25lbs. It's only hitch is having 120 round magazine instead of a 240 round one. If you'd prefer to use the Mini-gun do buy the upgraded motor as the beginning DPS is about the same as a light machine gun until you do and the dampening sub frame allows more accuracy. I did use the mini-gun for quite some time before I stumbled upon the Avenger by accident

Thanks for the tip!
I've already got a 100 gun skill (required for the Brush Gun). Plus, I've got the weapons handling perk to knock 2 off the strength requirement. With the whiskey Rose perk I can get a +2 strength from whiskey with no ill effects so...
Oh, and the bottom line on hand loading as far as I can see...
.308 is worth hand loading--you get 50% more damage for no DT penalty compared to standard .308.
.44 mag swc is worth it because there's no .44 mag AP and the swc gives slightly more damage and -6 DT bonus.
45-70 gov't swc is worth it because there’s no 45-70 gov’t AP and it has similar bonus specs as the .44 mag swc. Also, 45-70 gov't ammo is so rare, if you don't hand load, you'll never have enough!
As far as I know, those are the only rounds worth reloading.
